Liverpool are closing in on the £25million capture of Burnley's Michael Keane. Personal terms have been agreed in principle.

I think hes excellent.
Big powerful dominant lad. And fast across the ground.

Ex manc though and we will be giving them 25% of the fee. Ace.

This is good news. I like a player that has actually played football. 🙂

Clearly a very good, solid centre back. However, it's one thing impressing for Burnley when you're asked to defend a lot more than you would be at Liverpool. Not to say he can't be equally effective with us but that would be the question mark over him.
Then again whoever we sign it's always got a degree of risk.

Few centre backs in the Prem have made a name for themselves this season. That Maguire lad at Hull and Mowson at Swansea as well.

It's happening again though innit. We start off going 'all out' for van dickhead. That gets fucked off before the window even opens. Now we're competing against the mancs for some hopeful: one of our top targets no doubt, while the mancs chase all their real targets for ten times the price. They'll still beat us to him anyway, just to put us in our place. He'll be shite for them and end up back in the bottom half of the premier league with some other cunts. In the meantime we'll be having a go at plan C.

Im not sure he really is much of an improvement on Lovren, maybe slightly less prone to his lapses in concentration

Klopp said recently that the most important thing for his team is how a centre back defends in space.

So it doesn't seem to make sense to sign a centre back from a team that by all accounts defends deep with the full backs staying narrow.

We made a mistake in not realising why Lovren looked good for Southampton, this seems like the same all over again.

Carra:

"I like him, he has had a really good season but it's a big jump," he said on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football.
"To go from a team right at the bottom to a team right at the top. I don't think he's quite at that level.
"It's going to be £25m for a young English player - is he better than Matip or Lovren? I think he's at the same level.
"If you're paying £25m on a centre back, you want yo put him straight in your team to make a massive difference."

Neville:

"He's a great type, the type that would be a student during the week," Neville added.
"He'd be reliable, want to listen and grow, everything you'd want from a footballer. He's got all the right ingredients.
"He is still young. Liverpool need that defence sorting out and haven't had a defensive linchpin since Jamie retired."

£25m here means more money elsewhere. We need a LB, Winger, DM and striker. Spending £50m on defender may mean we have to compromise elsewhere.

Its a story in the Mirror though, created the same night Puel said van Dijk is staying at Soton next season.
According to the Telegraph Spurs, Utd, City, Everton and us are interested in Keane.
That is probably more true then that we're close to a deal at this point.

It's interesting to see what the various analysis sites say about Keane, a die-hard United fan :

Who Scored : Has given him higher scores on average when Burnley have been under the cosh, lower when they were generally more in the game or on top, regardless of whether they won or lost.

Who Scored : Strengths; Aerial, Blocking, Concentration, Does not dive into tackles Weaknesses ; tackling MOTM : twice this season.

Earlier this month, Jurgen Klopp outlined what he was looking from a new centre-back this summer, explaining the difference in playing in a defence where the team don’t sit deep. “A centre-half for a top team is playing with a lot of space at the back,” he said. “That’s how Tottenham act, how City act and sometimes how Arsenal act. “If we go for a centre-half we need to know how he acts in big spaces.”
Whether Keane is capable of playing in the ‘big spaces’ as Klopp explains it isn’t so clear, with Burnley very much a team who sit deep with a solid back four and full-backs who don’t push up.

I added Varane to the matrix below since he may possibly be available this Summer. I'll run another matrix on other mooted options tonight. these stats however don't indicate a player that would suit our possession/attacking style.

Shallow as it may be, judging by that picture of his I think we should stay well clear..

Also, is Varane going to be available??

LET'S GO ALL-IN!!!!

I've said it before but one of the stand-out statistics for Keane is blocks and clearances. He is a proper defender and by all accounts, a leader of the defence and that's what we need. We give away far too many

His long range passing is good as well.

As Rosco has pointed out, Van Dijk's injury makes him a huge risk at that money

How does Keane compare to the other English centre backs around his age.

Stephens at Southampton or Gibson at Boro.

This will probably end up on page 468 of that "Most ridiculous forum quotes" thread 😉
