Gerrard's attitude in not getting back for their second was awful. Same for the whole midfield.

They were just walking or jogging back as soon as we lost the ball.

I hope they get a massive rollicking..

He's 32 now he won't be getting anything back his legs have gone. He just strolls around the pitch these days.

his legs may be gone but even things like simple passes , his shooting , his freekick near the end ...so much he tries is woeful these days . I would have thought he could still pull those sorts of things off .

That last 15 minutes exemplified how much of a loss Lucas is to our structure.

Someone to just calm shit down, breaks up play effortlessly, negate attacks, and get us in shape. It's not pretty, but it's vital work - and we've conceded too many goals and thrown away too many leads in his absence.

Make peace with it mate ... He's going to Chelsea.

There was a stupid naivety about us tonight, that I doubt we'd have shown at this stage had it been a league game. The striving to twat someone at home is all too evident, we could and should have shut up shop after the 2nd goal, despite what the numpites would have said, we should have controlled the game at that point. Slowed things down, kept the ball and made them work, while having enough control to drop behind the ball when needs be. Instead, we thought "fuck it! Let's get a 3rd!" and left ourselves wide open, cf Arsenal, West Brom, United, etc. We need to learn on this note, fast. We need to live within our abilities, we don't score enough goals to go gungho.

Sorry mate but it's not all down to Lucas' absense.

I'm a big fan of Lucas and we undoutedly miss him but Gerrard's a highly experieced player and Sahin has plenty of experience even though he's only 22 so you'd like to think they could be half responsible and hold the midfield together in order to protect our lead in the last 15.

The gaps they left was a fucking joke. Leaving the defence badly exposed and it was no real surprise to see them equalise. The warning signs were there.

We did miss him tonight, or someone in his role, the threat they got was from that area infront of our back four. We've been waiting to become unstuck against a player who can crack it with accuracy from outside the box, and tonight it hit us. When our second goal went in, we should have repositioned ourselves, showed discipline and kept the ball but also protected our vulnerable areas. We didn't and it cost us.

Of course we missed him, im not denying that but you'd still like to think Gerrard and Sahin could protect the defence more than they did.

Yeah, but we've had Gerrard playing for us now for how long? I don't know why people keep trying to tell themselves that he has, or should have, the discipline to do it, he doesn't, he's a wanderer, and old age isn't going to make him suddenly want to sit and defend. Sahin isn't the right type of player either, he's a deep playmaker, ala Alonso (but not as good), and Alonso wasn't good enough to be left to do the DM role for any length of time either.

Lucas should have been there, and as he wasn't available, Hendo should have been left in midfield and instructed to play there.

Know what you're saying but unfortunately for Gerrard he's no longer the great attacking midfielder he once so the sooner he realises he needs to adapt his game, the better.
If he was productive the final third you'd understand him neglecting his defensive duties(to an extent) but he's not so it begs the question - what's his role in the side?

I actually think Alonso was underrated defensively, he always put himself about and could make a tackle.

Gerrard is to defensive midfield discipline to what I am to patience with Dreamy.

And Sahin’s a fucking luxury player who’s not great at anything. He just floats around aimlessly leaving nice imprints on a game; never dominating, never controlling, never penetrating, never influencing. He’s just nice, and tidy, and clean.

I wish you had the patience with Sahin as you have with Lucas. He was excellent defensively too, and you can tell he's got tremendous class.

I’m not disputing his talent.

I’m questioning his application, worth to the team currently, and what his overall output is beyond some nice stuff. He does nothing defensively or offensively right now.

Oh ... I don't think he's going to do for us what he did for Dortmund. So I doubt we'll see it here ... Pity.

To be fair to sahin, out of anyone he was doing the most tracking and closing down towards the end of the game when the other fuckers were getting forwards alright and not bothering their arses to come back.

Rodgers has to start thinking about how he's going to manage Gerrard and get the most out of him and Stevie himself needs to consider how he plays his game without that little burst of pace that used to do so much for him.

Can also see why Assaidi isn't starting.

Alonso would have fouled the fucker in the buildup to their 2nd goal, got his yellow card and we would've held on for 2:1. That's the class and calm presence we are lacking.

I also thing Rodgers made a mistake with his substitutions. You can't play with Downing and Henderson as your fullbacks and Sahin and Gerrard as your CMs when you need to protect a lead. It's just stupid.

Gerrard pissed me off on that front. I know he's always been a questionable captain, but ffs how hard is it to tell the lads to keep ball for a bit and just see out the game, you know organise the kids like other captains do.

Bobadilla has his parents tattoed on his chest. Wouldn't that kind of ruin sex?

Not necessarily.

If he likes it doggy style as a taker, he's fine.

Unless he has his grandparents tattoed on his back.

Thought Cole did well. Looked much more motivated and took his goal well.

Henderson looked very nervous at right back and Wisdom's withdrawal meant YB attacked a lot more down our left flank. It wasn't a surprise when they got an equaliser it had been coming for some time.

Even so, we had enough one on one chances cf Suso, Henderson to have put the game to bed early.

The big disappointment is that we now have to travel to Udinese with a strong team.

The system is fine, but we didnt track back or play with a bit more calm and experience.
In hindsight we should have brought on Allen when Cole got subbed.
That would have given us much more control.

Its disapointing that we didnt think or act like we should have on 2-1. No need to send our entire midfield in attack and leave so much space behind us.

exactly.

Shelvey>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Henderson

Its not even fair to compare them. Last night Shelvey should have had a goal and an assist, Henderson should have had a goal. But he fucked it up.

No, the system isn't fine. Mainly because we don't have the players to make it work.

Systems needs to fit the players you have rather than the other way around (at this stage).

True

I think rodgers is still tinkering. Last night he made Sahin play deepest (and he did ok), and in the league he's tried allen (Because he can cope with the pace).

ATM we need a DM urgently (lucky lucas is nearly fit). Then it depends on whether rodgers believes suso will develop quickly or take time. IF he takes time, then we need to buy a matchwinner for that position (i.e. erikson, boudebouz etc) to improve us now, and develop suso in all the cup competitions. Same problem for the wings, we need someone to try and force sterling out the squad so that he can be rested and not burned out by 21.

We need over the next 2 years: Back up DM (hence coadys recent promotion i think...even if he was average...hopefully he will kick on), 2 wingers/wide forwards (to provide competition/improve upon assaidi and sterling), and another striker to back up suarez.

When Sahin goes and Gerrard retires, we should be ok as allen/shelvey will move into that role with lucas/reserve DM behind him. Suso/shelvey/another AM will play behind the front 3, who need to be determined.

I can't disagree with any of that, it's just that I'm not sure Rodgers has the time.

You say over the next 2 years that we need another striker to back up Suarez... I think in that time we will need to find his replacement (probably on the cheap) because I don't think our improvement will be rapid enough for Suarez to stay if Rodgers stick rigidly with his ideals and system. Then a couple of years later it will be Sterling's turn to want to go and then it will be Suso's etc etc.

It's what we've seen at Arsenal and they have a much better manager with the same amount of money as us.

We need a great leap forward soonish and I think that requires our manager to be much more pragmatic, which to be fair he has shown more of recently.

Hopefully, Rodgers turns out to be a shrewd investor, and doesn't spend it easily. Theres every cance suarez, suso, sterling could all go within the next 2 years, but i'm hoping that his man management skills and suarez' seemingly loving it here (not that that ever matters in the end) will mean rodgers gets given the time with those players. I think it will pan out like this:

2012-14: Team is built around suarez
Summer 2014: Suarez leaves
2015-17- Team built around suso (IF he develops)
Summer 2017: Suso leaves

I'm hoping that within these 5 years (where suso will only be 24?), we will have developed our team substantially with our limited (comparitively) budget. Theres every chance rodgers will fuck up, but based on his 1 window so far....Hes not exactly done much wrong per se. Yes, mild overspend on some players but nothing compared to what we're usedto
