Looks like he is off if reports are to be believed ... destination Inter or Barca.

If true, what a massive blow to us.

I can't get my head around it to be honest.

How on earth have we managed to let 2 world class midfielders leave within a season of each other? (Alonso & Masche).

Once again we find ourselves having to spend time in the transfer window replacing a key player.

I had a rant about Mascherano leaving to a friend of mine who supports Barca - and this is what he had to say:

The problem is that your club doesn’t take actions straight away.. when Benitez struggled to win a league title 1 or 2 seasons after winning the champions league, he should’ve been fired and new person brought in, but kept Benitez around, and didn’t win anything for too long and basically I think the players are starting not to believe in the management and board room.

It’s club football, you can’t just keep giving chances and chances to the same guy every season and hope that one day it’ll happen. 1 or 2 seasons without a trophy is acceptable but Benitez got far too long of a chance and I think Mascherano lost hope. Now he just thinks that with Hodgson coming in, it is just a change too late.

I think it’s a joke that your fans idolised Benitez in the way with that plaque and putting him in the same category as Daglish and former great managers that helped Liverpool win not only European success but league as well. Yes he is a great manager but certainly not what Liverpool was all about, which is dominating in England and Europe. That’s the Liverpool of the past.

I worry about your future.

Players do want to win trophies. It’s a fact. Players can’t be bigger than a club. Puyol, Iniesta, Xavi they are nobody compared to the club. If they want to leave then they can. The important thing is you need a good youth development so you can churn out young stars.

You're mate can do one.

At least we can afford to pay our lads their wages!

I've expected he'd be moving on for over a year now... surely most suspected the same.

He'll leave, we'll move on and that's that... it's not how we want it to play out, but the position we're in we have no choice.

The reason he is leaving is due to his wife..

its fucking simple and most of us have been expecting it for a long time.

As for your Barca friend.... things are done very differently there than in the Uk.

However... Gen Y are motivated most by progression and change.. Do old strict managers given long term contracts to promote gradual change suit the next generation??

You are welcome Masher

LFC and Rafa saved his career. Good luck, another not so loyal subject.

So you would forgive him, if he follows Rafa then?

I think he has paid his dues. He was on a very low pay (relatively for midfielder of his caliber), and he has played for 2 and a half season with a lot of heart. He owes us nothing. I struggle to think who else would give us that kind of tenacity down the middle. When he is on the pitch, it is more or less guaranteed that our midfield won't be over-run or out-muscled.

things were shit for him at West Ham.. But if it wasnt us that signed him it would have been someone else.

I dont think he owes us anything.. He has worked his ass off for us and unfortunately his family could not settle here.

i dont believe he wants to leave because 'we are a sinking ship'... He just cannot live in a country where his family are so isolated

Arsed.

I'm really not. He's not THAT good, I'd have £30m over him staying anyday of the week.

He might be the specialist in what he does, but as a rounded player he's nothing to right home about, and regards us letting our two best midfielders go (or whatever), we haven't really 'let' them go have we? Alonso got fucked around by Rafa and Masher is unsettled in England, not much we can do about that.

We've had too many players that need complimenting to make them worth their place in the team (because of their own shortfalls). Maybe it's time we had a different approach in midfield.

Lets spend some money.

Spot-on. It's quite simple, Mascherano's wife hates it here and has never learned English.

Unfortunately I think Mascherano is that good. If he wasn't, he wouldn't be Captain of Argentina.

If Argentina weren't that good they'd have a shit manager. Oh. 😉

Oh dear. So your mate thinks that Masher had lost hope in Benitez and yet his most likely destination is Inter? Twat.

As for Masher, I'm not convinced he'll leave and would be happy enough should he stay - he is, after all, probably the best at what he does. There is however a good argument to say that we'd be at least as effective as a team with a dissimilar defensive midfielder. Even in our bad run of form last year we still maintained the same old stat of having the lions share of possession against most premiership teams, somewhat negating Masher's strengths. As a team against which most teams want to play counter-attack or long-ball football (over Masher's head) he tends to see a lot of the ball. His passing is average at best and so we end up with a scenario of Masher playing in a quasi-quarterback role with the odd crunching tackle and chase thrown in. Against Man Utd he's invaluable (when he can keep his head) but against Stoke etc he's largely redundant.

I think we might actually benefit (in 80% of games) with having a deep lying midfielder who's good in the tackle and disciplined in the role, but with a much better range of passing. Sounds a bit like Alonso, but perhaps more mobile?

Asamoah (cultured left foot) and Banega (lovely passing range) fit the bill for me. Asamoah in particular has a serious engine, bite in the tackle, allied to real passing ability.

Gerrard might get his way and play in centre midfield more?
If Gerrard wants to play a more defensive central midfield role, he certainly didn't show it this season.

We have Lucas and Aquilani!

So that means we need to buy two midfielders
I believe Aquilani will be a fine player for us.

Id say the top two are correct though

Mascherano is a fine player who we will miss, which is why Inter Milan and Barcelona are interested in him. But for £30M we can improve the team as a whole, and I'm confident we will do so.

We need to sell him this summer and be done with it.
