I know he's been one of our best players, but part of me thinks we might benefit from Rafa losing the option of playing TWO defensive midfield players, surely without Mascher he have to play one defensive midfielder and Aquillani or Gerrard alongside.
How many Premier league sides or top European sides play week in, week out with two defensive players in central midfield?
No wonder we can't score, there's hardly ever anyone in the box when we get wide and I know Torres is the best striker probably in the world and Ngog didn't do too badly whilst Torres was out but there's only so much any player can do when there's so little support.
The only reason I can see for playing both Mascher and Lucas is that Rafa sees Lucas as Maschers replacement should he leave for Barca and he wants to play him so he can improve and learn from Mascher, and yes, he has improved but at what cost?
He changed Carra over to the other side of defence too, something which does seemed to of unsettled them. Is that not forward planning for when Carra takes on the Hyppia role as his career starts to wind down in the next few years?
So it begs the question, why, when we came so close last season, has Rafa sent them out in such a way that is never going to bring us the title this season? It seems to be that he is trying to cushion us for when we lose Mascher and Carra starts to take his place on the bench more and more.
As for Aquillani, he seems the sort of player who will sprint from one box to another, and will do the defensive duties as well as attack; exactly what we have been lacking at times. I know this requires a high level of fitness and he did tire quickly against Fiorentina but honestly, any idiot could have him up to some degree of fitness to take the field in probably 3-4 weeks at worst (from when he had returned to training), so why wait 7 and then find out he still isn't up to it?
I am normally quite defensive about Rafa being sacked, mainly because of the question of who do you get to replace him, however after losing to the bottom of the table, being 13 points off where we should be and not making a single bit of progress despite most first choice players being fit and available I don't see we have much choice. I honestly don't know who I'd want to replace him but we'll have a far greater problem of replacing him in summer with a world class manager if we don't make fourth place and look like a beaten side even when we get a goal ahead in matches.
It's not enough any more to say we won the Champions league in his first season, took us back to the final and nearly won us the league last year. No Liverpool fan should be happy with that! Not in 5 years! This season what do we have to look forward to? Maybe fourth spot and a run in the FA cup? We're so bad at the moment we're not even seeded for the Europa league!
We have the players to get us there, but no direction, no confidence, no belief, no tactics, no leadership and ultimately no chance of fourth spot (if we continue in this direction) let alone winning the league!

Begone balanced poster, this is a place for nutters and apologists only.
Welcome by the way.
