Ibe playing for us. Valdes in goal for them.

Vigouroux, McLaughlin, Maguire, Randall, Williams, Chirivella, Canos, Brannagan, Sinclair, Ibe, Ojo.

Subs: Fulton, Trickett-Smith, Madger Gomes, O’Hanlon, Cleary.

[Vigouroux is a young Londoner whom Inglethorpe recruited in the summer from Spurs' academy. Madger Gomes is another who might be unfamiliar. He also arrived in the summer from Villarreal. He's a left-footed attacking midfielder considered quite a prospect.]

Manc XI: Valdés, McNair, Thorpe, Blackett, Vermijl, Anderson, Pereira, James, Powell, Lingard, Janko.

Powerful midfield and attack !

With Ojo, Sinclair and Ibe we've got some exceptional pace up front. I don't know all the other under 21 teams but I can't think of any that have anything like that sort of pace right across the front.

Best chance so far - a defender fluffs a pass deep in his own half and Canos should have scored. Canos is a very good player who's been in form recently but that was a poor miss.

Mancs go 1-0 ahead, against the run of play. Poor marking in the area as a free kick comes in.

We've looked the better team for most of the half but none of our back 3 look comfortable. Brannagan is looking excellent and Sinclair and Ojo look very good too. Ibe has had moments but nothing much has come off for him yet.

This commentator is obsessed with Brannagan's manc associations. He's mentioned three times that he comes from a family of mancs, and now he's noted he has the same agent as Rooney.

80 minutes gone and still 2-1 to the mancs. A much more experienced side than ours and it shows. We've got quite a few good players tonight but just a little naive when coolness and craftiness most matters. Frustratingly, we're away from home with three fast forwards and we;re not getting the ball up to them quickly enough or pushing it into space ahead of them. Like the senior side, we get into a decent position near their area and then go for an extravagant lob or a clever flick rather than a simple but quick pass or one-two that would more likely get us in.

2-1 full time. A frustrating game. It wasn't quite men against boys but the mancs had much more experience and used it well. We had some hard-working players, such as Brannagan and Canos, but we rarely used the pace of Sinclair, Ojo and Ibe, even though their speed would have made most defenders at this level scared stiff. They'll learn much from this but the manager didn't seem arsed about changing things and we lacked the guile in the last third to make the most of our attackers.

Canos seemed to freeze when he found himself with a shooting chance on the edge of the area in the last minute, a pity because he has always seemed confident and willing to have a go the other times I've watched him.

Yes thanks Macca.

How did Brannagan play anyway. I was very impressed with him the few times I saw the reserve/U21 matches last season. Also do you know what his contract situation is.

I thought he played pretty well. Like the rest, not up to his usual standards but he was probably the most industrious player on show, always trying to get something happening and better at pressing than most of his teammates. As for his contract situation, he's definitely being watched by lots of scouts but I gather the club is planning to tie him up on a better deal. They'd better hurry up.

He looks like a senior player, but one who's maybe just beginning to let his frustration get to his game. He's fast, strong (he's obviously been working on that in the gym) and aggressive, but he was closed down pretty easily tonight and he lacked the old passion and positivity that used to make him such a bright spark in the side. I'm maybe reading too much into it but in recent games he has the air of someone who doesn't really believe he's going to get a chance here. I do think he has enough to his game now to figure on the bench, definitely, but there's a danger he's starting to stagnate in the reserves.

I dozed off shortly after he was subbed but I don't remember him doing anything of note. Like you say he used to be a real bright spark in the team but that wasn't demonstrated tonight.

He looks like he's ageing in dog years too.

Ha, he does look older than the rest, yes. To be fair to the mancs, though it pains me to do so, they really closed down our right hand side. He was getting past one player only to find another racing in at his feet, and another pushing up behind. Canos wasn't finding space very often to give him the option of a pass, Brannagan was struggling to help him as well, so it was a really tough game for him. He's still working hard, there's no slacking, but the old confidence and pleasure he had in playing hasn't been apparent for a bit. I'm still a fan, but I must admit he looks now like he's doing a job, and just a job.

I see 33 year old Victor Valdes has instagrammed ( is that even a word) his pride at making his debut for manchester united under 21s tonight.

I haven't seen the youngsters in a good while but I'd always look forward to him and Ibe, disappointing to hear that he's not playing like he used to. To be fair to our lads that did look like a strong united side, probably a lot more first team games in their XI than ours this season.

Even the ref seemed inexperienced compared to them. One of their players slammed McLaughlin in the face on the blind side and just coasted on without a whistle. It was, to be polite, a learning experience.
