Manchester United voted 'most hated company in Britain'

The results of an online survey of more than 1,000 people, conducted by Online Opinions, show that the side built by Sir Alex Ferguson is the most hated firm in Britain.


No other football team is anywhere near as detested as the Red Devils, which secured 26 per cent of the overall vote, as the success, power and huge worldwide following were cited as major reasons for aggrieving football fans.

Man United owners the Glazer family may not be happy to hear that they run the most hated firm in the country.

The American businessmen are already battling discontent from their own fans, with many upset that the club was plunged into nearly £1billion worth of debt when it was purchased.
Second on the list of hated companies was Ryanair, with 23 per cent of those polled claiming to be fed up with the airline's 'money-grabbing' ways.

Utility company British Gas was named by 22 per cent of respondents as the company they really can't stand, after repeatedly raising gas prices.

Despite helping to plunge the country into recession with mountains of bad debt, government-owned Royal Bank of Scotland was further down the list, sparking rage in just 16 per cent of those taking part in the survey.
 
The Glazers won't give a stuff as long as the bottom line stays healthy.

I'm giving RBS a free pass after they helped us get rid of H and G.
 
I fucking hate Ryanair. Absolute shower of cunts, mind you i'm old enough to remember when flying was a nice experience and the stewardess was attractive and polite and brought you free booze as you smoked your dunhills...

I often wonder whether sponsors of Manchester United really know what they are doing when they lend their name to that loathsome business. I have always studiously avoided products and services that sponsor United.

I have owned my Audi car from new in 1999 and it still goes well. I am therefore very disappointed to see Sir Alex sitting in an Audi chair and partisan messages from Audi such as "Go Reds!" on the electronic hoardings around Old Trafford. When I do have to change my car, therefore, there's no way it's going to be another Audi. Even though I like them.

Surely there must be hundreds of thousands, nay millions, of consumers who are being put off Audi cars and other products and services for the same reason?
 
I doubt they're unaware of that risk, Portly. My guess would be they've done a totally cold-eyed assessment and decided they still stand to gain more than they lose.

Might be interesting to tell them what you've just told us and see how they reply.

Is right. They've made it so much cheaper for me to get over for a game (providing I watch for loopholes!) and that is all good with me.

For what its worth, Natwest have been fantastic to me.

No complaints what so ever, thats three branches that I use semi-regularly too.

Completely disagree, and at times I have found their service so utterly poxy I have put it down to anti English racism from Mr.Ryan himself. Incidentally my family is Anglo/Irish, in fact its more Irish/anglo!

My first ever flight was from London to Basel in 1996 with BA it cost me 115 quid return for a two/three hour flight, I could take a suitcase which i didnt have to squeeze into anything in front of some miserable jobsworth cunt waiting to fleece me, I was allowed to book the ticket without having to pay for the convenience of using the website and my credit card. I cant remember having to pay the woman to stick a label on my case and look at my passport for 2 seconds and she managed to smile and be polite. I also wasn't herded anywhere was not served by some grumpy fat waddle of a woman assisted by a ginger mancunian poofter. The free GnT's also went down very very well.

115 quid to switzerland.

Generally now it costs me about 150 to fly home form Spain return unless I check 4 months in advance etc etc... how the fuck has he made flying better??The only place he has made flying better is in his own mind, the man is a jumped up twat... i don't give a fuck how succesful he is or how proud people are of him. Toolbag.

Fuck Ryanair it's shit.
 
Ryanair is great because it is so much cheaper than the alternatives (at least whenever I try to book a flight).
I dont need a meal if the flight is less than 3 hours, and if I did why would I want to pay £200 for it?
It is a flying bus FFS, who gives a shit about the service.
 
I give a shit about the service, it's called being a customer. Anyway fuck em... there are nicer cheapo airlines.

There are fuckall airlines giving free g and ts now. The ones that did in the past are either out of business or were government subsidised. And guess who was paying for that?
 
Here's a great interview with Ryan Air from the NY times about 18 months ago. I love his approach to customers. Calls them whiny whingers, and the like.

On the subject of MAN U - weren't we hated when winning? I'd rather we were there!

No Apologies From the Boss of a No-Frills Airline

LONDON — Michael O’Leary, chief executive of the European budget airline Ryanair, was discussing his new scheme to charge passengers to go to the bathroom.

Most passengers — the “discretionary toilet visitors,†as he calls them — would eventually forgo in-flight bathroom use altogether, he predicted. Which is good, because he would also like to reduce the number of bathrooms per plane, to one.

What if the plane were stricken by some nasty, effluent illness, like food poisoning?

A snorting noise wafted over from the chair where Mr. O’Leary was sitting. “We don’t serve enough food for everybody to get food poisoning,†he said.

At 48, the quick-talking, blue-jean-wearing Mr. O’Leary is one of the most successful businessmen in Ireland, presiding over an airline that is, remarkably, flourishing in a brutal climate for airlines (and most other businesses). He is known for thick-skinned aggression, outrageous public statements and an implacable belief that short-haul airline passengers will endure nearly every imaginable indignity, as long as the tickets are cheap and the planes are on time.

“Soon he’ll be charging us for oxygen and number of limbs,†The Lying Rag groused in a column in June, when he unveiled his latest proposal — getting people to carry their own bags to the plane.

Mr. O’Leary revels in his persona as national pugilist and provocateur, alternately charming and offending.

He once dressed as the pope to advertise Ryanair’s new route from Dublin to Rome. He has declared that fat people should pay more for their seats, but that it would take too long to weigh them at the airport. And, at a news conference to discuss the possibility of starting trans-Atlantic flights, he suggested — to the consternation of the young woman gamely translating his remarks into German — that business-class customers would receive oral sex.

Mr. O’Leary may sometimes seem as if he is throwing out insane suggestions for their shock value. But in private, he is known as a tough negotiator whose canny timing and sharp elbows help him extract favorable deals, as when he put in a huge order for new planes when the market collapsed, after the Sept. 11 attacks.

His avowed enemies include unions (his workers are not unionized), politicians who impose airport taxes, environmentalists, bloggers who rant about poor service, travel agents, reporters who expect free seats, regulators who thwart his plans and airport owners like BAA, whom he once called “overcharging rapists.â€

There is method in all this, it seems.

Insulting, or, “slagging off,†as they say here, “the BAA and the British government and the rest is all designed to send strong signals to everyone who deals with Ryanair that you’re not going to get away with anything,†said Joe Gill, director of equity research at Bloxham Stockbrokers in Dublin.

RYANAIR flies more than 850 routes across Europe, often to obscure airports far away from big cities — “from nowhere to nowhere,†in the scoffing words of Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, who runs the competing airline EasyJet. Ryanair’s post-tax profit fell by 78 percent in the year that ended in March, but still amounted to $149 million. While most carriers are hemorrhaging passengers, Ryanair expects its passenger numbers to increase, to 68 million this year from 57 million in 2008.

The mystery is why so many people are willing to put up with an airline that, in the words of The Economist, “has become a byword for appalling customer service, misleading advertising claims and jeering rudeness towards anyone or anything that gets in its way.â€

“Nobody helps you — it’s as simple as that,†said Malcolm Ginsberg, editor in chief of the travel newsletter aerbt.co.uk, describing what happens to Ryanair passengers who need assistance at the airport.

That is not the point, Mr. O’Leary said in a recent interview. “Our customer service is unlike every other airline, which has this image of, ‘We want to fall down at your feet and you can walk all over us and the customer is always right,’ and all that nonsense.â€

By contrast, Mr. O’Leary continued, Ryanair promises four things: low fares, a good on-time record, few cancellations and few lost bags.

“But if you want anything more — go away! Will we put you in a hotel room if your flight was canceled?†Mr. O’Leary asked rhetorically. “No! Go away.â€

He was sitting in a cafe at the chamber of commerce here in London, drinking coffee. Soon, he would hold a news conference where, among other things, he would call Prime Minister Gordon Brown a “twit†and a “Scottish miser.â€

During the interview, he began riffing on the theme of when Ryanair grants refunds, which is never.

“Will we give you a refund on a nonrefundable ticket because your granny died unexpectedly?†he asked. “No! Go away. We’re not interested in your sob stories! What part of ‘no refund’ do you not understand?â€

Miss your flight because you had to wait too long at a Ryanair help desk? Too bad! Your luggage is slightly overweight? Throw away the excess, or wear it on the flight! Try to tote your duty-free purchases onto the plane in a shopping bag, when you already have a carry-on bag? Prepare to fork over $40 at the gate.

Ryanair’s fares are only 40 euros, or $56, on average. Mr. O’Leary just announced that he would sell one million seats for 5 euros apiece this fall. The airline offsets this with money from deals with hotels, car-rental services, and other partners, along with fees for everything from airport check-in ($56) to online check-in ($7).

MR. O’LEARY runs a tight ship in his office, too. Post-it notes and highlighters are banned. Executives bring in their own pens. To illustrate his commitment to that principle, Mr. O’Leary produced two pens from his pocket, both stolen from hotel rooms.

He stays in budget hotels. He always flies Ryanair, startling fellow passengers by taking their tickets at the gate and by boarding the plane last, where he invariably gets a middle seat.

Mr. O’Leary does not sit in an executive lounge, has no BlackBerry and does not use e-mail because, he says, “I couldn’t be bothered with all the crud and the crap and the rubbish that gets sent to you on e-mails.â€

He grew up outside Dublin and went to a Jesuit boarding school, where his nickname was Ducksie, on account of the way he walked.

“Was the education doled out with a good stiff slap?†he asked. “Yes. Did we suffer great emotional trauma? No.â€

He began working at Ryanair in 1988, became its deputy chief executive in 1994 and its chief executive in 1997. His personal fortune is estimated to be about $500 million.

“He’s one of the few home-grown successes in corporate Ireland in the last 40 years whose success has been sustainable,†Mr. Gill, the equity research director, said.

Mr. O’Leary lives on a farm outside of Dublin, raises cattle and racehorses, and rarely takes vacations. He irritated the Irish government by paying thousands of dollars for a taxi medallion for his Mercedes so that he could use the taxi lane, thereby circumventing traffic.

At home, Mr. O’Leary and his wife have three children age 4 and under. One of them was born this summer. There is no nanny. “That’s why I’m traveling frequently and overnighting in London,†he said, mostly joking.

Mr. O’Leary brushes off the criticism about customer service, pointing to Ryanair’s record of responding to complaints within seven days. Most come from people demanding refunds, who are told to go away. Also, the aggrieved have to complain by fax or letter. If they use e-ail, no one will respond.

“People will say†— here Mr. O’Leary adopted a whiny voice — “ ‘As the Founding Fathers wrote down in the American Constitution, we have the inalienable right to bear arms and send in our complaints by e-mail.’

“No, you bloody don’t! So go away.â€
 
In answer to your question near the beginning of your last post - no, we really weren't hated when we were winning. Some people used to say it would be "good for football" if somebody else got a look in, but that was pretty much all there was to it. We were absolutely nowhere near as despised as the Mancs are now by everybody who doesn't support them.

Hard to say for certain, but I put a large part of it down to that much derided concept (unfairly so IMO), the Liverpool way. We went about our business quietly, without the sheer aggression which Ferguson has deployed during his time in charge and which people - reasonably enough - credit for a large part of ManUre's success. Ferguson looked at Shanks' approach and saw that it was based on achieving psychological dominance as much as it was on playing well. Unfortunately there's a fundamental difference between him and Shanks, namely that Shanks was generally good-natured whereas Ferguson's a 24-carat cunt, and the two clubs have each taken their cues accordingly.
