Manchester United confirmed today that they have secured the most lucrative shirt sponsorship deal in football, believed to be a £20m-per-season, four-year partnership with the American financial giant, Aon Corp.

United have been scouring the globe for a new sponsorship deal since their current sponsor, AIG, the American insurance company, announced it would not be renewing its £14m-a-year deal when it expires at the end of the 2009-10 season.

AIG's decision followed massive losses suffered during the current economic crisis but, despite the downturn, United are understood to have eclipsed that deal – and the lucrative sponsorships of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Chelsea – with an £80m agreement with Chicago-based Aon.

Old Trafford officials have held negotiations with several companies about replacing AIG in recent months, including Sahara, the Indian financial services corporation, and Saudi Telecom.

David Gill, the United chief executive, said of the Aon deal: "Today's announcement clearly strengthens our position as one of the biggest clubs in world football.

"We look forward to being closely aligned with the world leader in risk management, a firm which shares our values and is an exciting partner for Manchester United."

20m pounds per year. AIG go bust and they go and get this. They really know how to run their business >🙁

The story doesnt tell which of the tabloids got the exclusive of the teamphoto showing of the 5 4...well got the teamphoto with showing of the league cup!!!

It helps when you've pretty much dominated football for a good 15 years and are a major worldwide brand.

I'm sure we'll get a lot more for our next deal. If not, it's time to sever ties with Carlsberg.

Yea, you'll forgive me for not having a chuckle for them "only" winning the league, before signing a sponsorship deal that even further increases their ability to win more.

Ah come on. Theire new sponsor deals enable them to pay 1/4 of this seasons interest on the loan Glazer took to buy them.... They didnt win the league, we lost it.. And if your depressed about their allways "new" great sponsordeals, live with it, cause they are good at that. We will stil lbeat them on the pitch next season... Even if their hyped sponsor deals allows them to pay 30 instead of 20 mill pounds for the Berbatovs of this world!!

Aon's main business is pensions administration.

Aon send me my pension payment every month.

Unfortunately, now I will be forced to refuse to accept these payments. >🙁

I admire your optimism.

United's fans admire the Premiership trophy on display at Old Trafford.

I fail to see anything bemusing about them getting what we paid for Torres (close to...) every year from their shirt sponsor. Especially knowing that whoever wants to win the next contract from them will have to bid even higher.

Considering we probably dont have a CEO, I have my doubts.

That's got to be better than having Parry in charge of negotiations.

I'm sure Nash and Ayres will be doing their bit while they find a suitable replacement.

Redirect it to me, I'll dispose of it appropriately. I'll ferociously curse them as I piss it up a wall.

It's a bit of a bummer, because I always used to boycott any product that was advertised on a Man Utd. shirt - Sharp, Vodafone, AIG insurance and so-on. Now I have been totally shafted. ;D
