Luis moving out wide

Given he's one of the very few players actually having a good season for us, does it really make sense to accommodate Sturridge potentially at Luis' cost?

None what so ever.

So the problem is - that this is either another colossal waste of money on a player who doesn't suit the position we need filled or is another expensive benchwarmer.

If he can operate out wide in a narrow front 3 and make an impact then great. Fluid movement between the 3 front players is essential, but he needs to be able to operate in more than a central role.

Let's be honest.... and it almost kills me to say it..... we'd almost be better sticking with Downing.

I don't like the fact the fact that Rodgers has gone public with this so early as it'll be more embarrassing if it fails.

I do like the fact that he's got clearly got balls - shifting Suarez to accommodate Sturridge, not Falcao or whoever, but Sturridge is a ballsy move.

I don't like the fact that we're looking to move Suarez but open to see how it pans out. Suarez is no stranger to playing out wide and all of that jazz... I hope it works out.

As BR said, Suarez will still find space and make the same runs as he is a world class player.
This is the same Suarez who found acres of space at Old Trafford and ran riot last season. He will always find space for himself. He might have a different starting position but I doubt he'll be hogging the touchlines. He will move, roam, find space and hurt teams. He is an amazing talent and in enjoying scoring goals, he will continue to do this. Sturridge will also move and interchange with Suarez as will Sterling or who ever is the third up there with them.

Suarez has played for his country and Ajax in a similar role. Not sure what that is though, a number 10 role, a 9 and a half, an 8 and 3/4. BR just makes stuff up sometimes.

I think it would make perfect sense to make Sturridge the target man and let Suarez play around him. I have always thought of Suarez as a "forward" rather than a striker, even though he has scored so many goals for us as an improvised striker.

I'd rather we went with something like this

------------------------Sturridge
Sterling-----Suarez

With Suarez having the option of staying central or pulling out wide as he pleases, rather than it being:

Suarez---Sturridge---Sterling

Suarez wont give a fuck if we win games. Hes just a winner and he gets as much pleasure from other players scoring as himself (check his celebs with Gerrard, Agger, Sterling, Raheem etc) as long as we win he will be happy and if it doesnt work Mr Rodgers will change it.
I reckon Suarez gets a free role.

Don't get me wrong I don't want to do anything that might slow up Suarez and especially not for Sturridge but Suarez might be ace buzzing off a center forward. Also he could do with some help up there.

I don't think we will move him or go out of our way to accommodate Sturridge, people are becoming too fixated on positions, we'll take it game by game and see what works, our wide players near enough always interchange during games and when Suarez pulls wide one will go central. The only reason it hasn't worked particularly well is because we haven't had another forward up there who will make the natural runs in behind and have a tendency to lurk in those positions when without the ball.

Anyway, as I said in the other thread, Rodgers has said he wants Suarez as the creative fulcrum in attack, so I doubt that means from a wide role, he said ultimately he sees him playing off a striker, which suggests he'll stay central, he'll drop in as he always does and also go wide, and the other two attackers will exploit the space ahead or wide of him.

People seem to be looking for some controversial aspect to this, the potential for an unsettled Luis.

It's Liverpool Football Club not the Luis Suarez show....

Good on Brendan he's the boss Luis will play where he is told. And the good thing is that Luis is such a pro he won't complain like some other egotistical twats in this league.

I wouldn't change anything until Suarez stopped scoring goals at such a prolific rate. It's just too risky.

Until then, Sturridge can play as a wide forward.

If we want another attacking player, it almost certainly means that Suarez will get less of the ball, and most likely he will score less himself. That's what happens and there's no way around it.

We just have to hope it will mean we score more, or more importantly, we get more points. I don't give a shit how many Suarez scores, as long as we win.

Can anyone explain to me what the hell a reverse winger is ?

I suppose it is a lefty playing on the right and vice versa so they tend to cut in rather than hug the touchline. That's only a guess like.

Dont think its gonna make difference imo. He'll still score. In fact I think it'll be easier for him.

Were going to have two young, pacy players who are good with the ball at their feet (one of whom we know can score goals) playing alongside a magician who's lethal from all positions across the front three.

When have we ever been able to say that? Options, options, options. It's all good people.

It's the first time in a long time that we have 3-4 players who should be able to win us games. We usually have one or two.

Think about Messi and the horrible Ronaldo. Neither operate in the CF position yet score bazillions of goals. So it shall be with Luis.

Messi does play through the middle (in a free role) though. He hasn't played out wide for a few seasons now.

I think we are all getting a bit carried away. We still need that shitfest of a midfield to start creating something....anything....at all.
We need a new PROPER creative midfielder.

I'd rather another striker, than another midfielder. The more people we have that can score goals, the better.

I also enjoy watching people trying to cram players into a line up.

Racist

When Barca won the treble a couple of seasons back Messi played in the middle with Eto'o on the right.

Whatever works innit.

Yes, but my point was that he doesn't play a CF role (I never said he didn't play in the middle). When he was playing with Villa, Villa was playing in the traditional CF position, yet it was Messi grabbing the goals. The point is that Suarez needn't be less effective or less of a threat just because he isn't leading the line.
