Loaned out players who were good enough to stay?

With Maving doing well in Belgium it made me wonder if we've mistakenly loaned out players who turned out to be good for another team?

Only examples I can come up with is Alou Diarra and to a lesser extent Aquilani.

Mavinga is doing especially well as Karate Chop merchant. Jeesus, I'd be afraid to have him back at Melwood!

Actually most of the time when you loan players out, you naturally hope they'll do well - either to return as a better player or increase their value for resale/permanent move. It just that for us, it'd more or less been a way to 'get rid' of players from the squad - perhaps in no small part due to the sheer size of the playing staff size. Those loaned out virtually leave on a free subsequently - either due to contract expiring or mutual consent. Mavinga's contract for instance, only has a yr to go so if he stays on at KRC Genk for another season, he'll probably leave on a bosman straight after.

Ooooooooh......let meeeeee seeeeeeee nooooow.

Who was that wee Spanish lad ?

His name is on the tip of my tongue.

Yeah well I kinda meant those who've gone to big teams etc.

The fact that they've done well elsewhere doesn't necessarily mean that they were good enough to stay here, or that it would have made sense to keep them even if they were.

True but we'll never really know, would we?

What if Tottenham never sold Taarabt or Man U kept Pique and Rossi?

Alou Diarra went on to become a regular in the french national team and won a couple of titles with Lyon and Bordeux.

That's just football. Sometimes things just don't work out for players at a club and they excel at their next club.

Its a cycle thing isn't it? If not for the loan, the likes of Diarra wouldn't have gotten the required matches and experiences to showcase their talent or improve. It gets recycled back to the question of what the intention to loan out the player was for? To simply move him out/put him on the transfer window or in view of progress and future integration back to the team.

We tend to loan players back to their country whereas our youngsters who went out on loan seldom feature regularly or normally went to the lower leagues. Those who were loaned out usually have very short duration left on their contract too, allowing them to basically leave for nominal/no fee the season after the loan. It seemed that the moment they were loaned out, they were written off. Haven't thought of anyone who was loaned out with 'purpose' and then let go off wrongly. Thus, don't really think anyone could fall into the 'mistakenly loaned out' players category. If there really were players under such category, I'd say its the likes of Hamill, Anderson and Hobbs. Yet they haven't 'turned out to be good for another team' (of our 'size') yet. 😛

The only players I can think of who were loaned out and then brought back to Liverpool because they impressed during their loan-spells are Kelly and Danny Murphy.
At least they're the ones who made an instant impact in the team.

Yeah, I was pretty glad that we're finally showing signs of making the loan system work to our advantage. Starting with Ayala's loan to Championship instead of La Liga to Pacheco's, although Eccleston and Amoo's one were last successful.

Its true, there haven't been many. Warnock was another one though, and Traore - though it was debatable whether we should have brought him back really!

It was slightly different with Murphy I think. He was essentially told he could go and was sent back to Crewe on loan, which kinda gave him the boot up the arse he needed. He altered his attitude, worked a bit harder and obviously impressed Houllier enough to give him one more chance.
