3 - Bugsy, for the money he won me when he scored the first goal against the blueslime at 50/1

My shout for no 19.

Incredible squad.

Can a case be made for Pegguy Arphexad for 19? - Morientes was gash but Pegguy won 6 medals for the reds. 2001 treble, plus the charity shield and Super Cup! Come on - Lets hear it for Pegguy!

There's a better argument for leaving 19 empty than there is for any player already suggested for it

Every good squad needs 3 keepers, and Morientes wouldn't get a game with those strikers there...

More or less, but if SG67 sees it he'll go mental at the omission of Billy Liddell, and he might even quibble about Elisha Scott and Alex Raisbeck.

My only gripe is the inclusion of Finnan, there just must have been better incumbents during our heyday. I always think he's weirdly overrated on here, people go on like he's some kind of legend rather than just a good solid full back.

Well, the fair way to do a squad by number would be to consider players only for their true numbers (i.e. the numbers they had their best years) and not the numbers they wore incidentally, just to bring them in the squad. For e.g. Gerrard should be considered only for 8, Owen only for 10.

Kuyt was a better number 18 for us than Owen surely?

I was with you all the way on Jockey & then Whelan, OK with Molby (though he only wore 14 as he was sub a lot .. i dont think squad numbers were in before he left, were they?).

But I can't accept takign Nicol's No.4 shirt off him - he wore that for all his matches at right back, left back, center back, center mid, right mid & left mid; I guess he must have worn 2 when he was in goal or up front?

Lawrenson was great, but I woudl demote him purely based on his record as a pundit, cos I'm fickle and Nicol is my all time hero

Was trying to build the best. most balanced team as well as using the numbers... Nicol (who did wear 2) + Lawrenson > Neal + Nicol. AND that leaves us with 3 FBs but only 1 CB. That's all I was doing... I too remember Chico fondly in the no. 4.

Yes it's actually surprising (to me at least!) how many players in that era did change numbers. Tommy Smith had the 10 shirt of course for quite a while, Emlyn changed between 3 and 6, Souey had at least two numbers, Nicol a few, etc etc.

I remember Criag Johnston in 5, 7, 8, 10 and 11. Michael Robinson often seemed to just get the last jersey out of the bin too.

Looking back, what a piece of genius from Shanks when he gave Smith the number 10 shirt for some European match and one of the opposition defenders spent the first half hour or so trying to mark him just outside Tommy's own penalty area!

Not sure what's 'fair' or 'unfair' about it, it's just a silly exercise.

I know, maybe the wrong choice of words. Just saying that if we're carrying out the exercise, it should be true to what it's meant to be - picking the players who did best justice to particular squad numbers. Else, it sort of turns into an exercise of just picking a best ever squad.

Indeed. Alan Kennedy scored winning goals in two European Cup finals. Surely he should be at least considered!

Spoilsport! Halmeister revived the forum from a semi-coma with this!

Exactly!

I can see what he's getting at, and I did consider it, but it would be too hard, and I think the squad would end up being shite. You'd have Josemi as your number 17, for example.
