Liverpool's greatest ever squad by number

It's quiet in here today, so how about a game? We have to compile a squad of the best Liverpool players based on their squad number. Eg. Liverpool's greatest ever number 25 will be Reina, but what about best ever number 4? There can be only one player per number. Let's go up to 25.

I'm a bit too young to remember the numbers most of the older players wore, so will need some help.

1. Clemence
2.
3.
4. Nicol
5.
6.
7. Dalglish
8. Gerrard
9. Rush
10. Barnes
11. Souness
12. Hyypia
13.
14. Alonso
15.
16.
17.
18. Owen
19.
20.
21. Lucas
22. Insua (!)
23. Carragher
24. Allen
25. Reina

23 Fowler

My two all-time childhood favourites both wore 5... Ray Kennedy, then Ronnie Whelan. I liked Ray so much that Swansea immediately became my 'other' team when he left us!

Heart says Ronnie, head say Ray. Fuck it, I'm going with Ronnie.
Can we at least agree that Agger is 3rd out of the number 5s then?

Dunno, mate - Milan Baros had that magical three day spell... 🙂

Oh, and as good as Xabi was for a few seasons, Big Jan wore 14, so he gets it.

I'd actually get a little creative in my team...

Steve Nicol wore 2 at times, so I'd give him that shirt and Mark Lawrenson would get no. 4 for me. Steve Finnan would probably get no. 3, though (as good as SF was for us) I'm searching my memories to find a better option down the years .

19 is Babel i think, can't remember who had it under ged

It might well be the shirt with the worst record of dire players!

Since we started having squad numbers, 19 has been worn by Torben Piechnik, Mark Kennedy, Pegguy Arphexad, Fernando Morientes, Ryan Babel and Stewart Downing.

Maybe its cursed?

I think 22 is just as cursed having been worn by the brilliance of: Steve Harkness, Titi Camara, Chris Kirkland, Mo Sissoko, Imeliano Insua and Danny Wilson

I suppose in terms of consistency and ability it would have to be Gerry Byrne, although he was before my time. Alec Lindsay would be behind him. Then you've got the 'characters' who made an impact - Alan Kennedy and Joey Jones.

Was thinking that Lindsay might be my option, based on what I've seen on tv and read about him... SF is deffo the best, most consistent (and underrated) no. 3 since I've been paying attention, I think.

Get fucked 🙂

Kennedy is my favourite ever player, he was a genius. As good as Agger is what will he ever be remembered for?

Tattoos at the very least! (And therein lies the solution - Kennedy with the number 4 shirt, Agger with the number 4 tattoo.)

I was with you all the way on Jockey & then Whelan, OK with Molby (though he only wore 14 as he was sub a lot .. i dont think squad numbers were in before he left, were they?).

But I can't accept takign Nicol's No.4 shirt off him - he wore that for all his matches at right back, left back, center back, center mid, right mid & left mid; I guess he must have worn 2 when he was in goal or up front?

Lawrenson was great, but I woudl demote him purely based on his record as a pundit, cos I'm fickle and Nicol is my all time hero
