So... two weeks ago we were getting accused left, right and centre of being amateurs in the transfer market, dragging our heals while the likes of City, Chelsea and Arsenal were inevitably about to start spending, leaving us, once again, left behind.

People might have issues about fees and about the players we've signed, but no one can accuse us of dragging our feet. Only ourselves and United have been heavily active so far and making statements of intent. It's a far cry from pissing about on the last day of August, as was suggested would happen.

Comolli: What we are very pleased about is that we are still early in July. We've played only one game pre-season, and we've got a lot of players in. That will allow Steve (Clarke), Kevin (Keen) and Kenny to work well with the players straight away and not have to wait until the end of August, like sometimes you have to do.

Absolutely. I had intended to post the same thing at some point but I was far too lazy... it's no coincidence that we've often started poorly having brought in players at the end of the window, just gotten them back from international duty, etc. Though our signings may not have been the most exciting, I can't wait to watch us start the season.

Agree with both you fellas. There have been references in the media recently to Kenny's wanting deals done as early as poss, in order to get a good long time to work with the players involved before the real stuff begins. Good to see us all pulling together, and in a sensible direction.

Well said mark but not only that we've shown backbone with juve on alberto, with blackPool on Adam and we woes away from marveux. These are things we didn't do in the past. I really think downing and Adam for 21m is a complete snip as well. Finally As you say mark we have acted decisively and quickly which means pre season will go well.

Comolli has said the spending spree is 'coming to an end'
In an ideal world i'd like a left back & a forward/striker

So no Mata, no CB and no LB (not bothered about LB - we are covered IMO) ?

Disappointing. We still need maybe Mata and a CB to have a squad that could challenge.

Looking forward to seeing our formation - anyone seen anything that would give a clue from our two tour matches ?

I don't think he said that at all did he? He said:

I'm sure there will be players going out because some players would like to play more and have more minutes. We will probably have a few loans as well, players who we would like them to develop, into the Championship or the leagues abroad. In terms of players coming in, it's difficult to say. I think we are going to sit down, look at the situation, see where we are, see who might leave and then we will reassess later. But we have done most of what we wanted to do.

Well that sounds more positive. Sounds more like "we need to get some players off the books before we get any more in". Though it does sound like Mata is now not a consideration, always feared it was an either/or case with Mata/Downing.

As far as Citeh are concerned they need to lose players left right and centre (18 players over 'budget' isn't it ?) - but their two big signings look like being Aguero & Nasri.

It's what i saw on sky sports news earlier..

Mark,we may not have dragged our feet, but there is a question of whether we've bought well.

If I go to your car boot sale and offer you 100 pds for a cracked teapot with a 1.00 sign on it you can bet we'll conclude our business quickly. There were weaknesses all over the pitch, and getting in 3 midfielders (aqua's return, adam, henderson) hasn't fixed that

We haven't addressed everything because it's A: going to take time and B: why would we buy a new CB if we reckon Kelly will be ready this time next year?

I know its going to take time, which is why our glee at finishing our business is short-lived.

And if not getting in a CB is based on Kelly's return solely then A. I'd be worried and B. So should you

AV, the point wasnt about us finishing our business early, it was acknowledging the fact we've got alot done already. People were moaning that we were dragging our feet.

Not best place to post it but I'm on my phone so its going here anyway:

@John_W_Henry we won´t make the Champions League , and won´t be able to sign the best players yet again, willing to bet my house on that ...

.... who then came to China and drew against a really crap Chinese team ! They are all friendlies, we used 22 players against Malaysia. It's ludicrous to think that anything that happens in these friendlies has any bearing on how we will perform once the season starts.

Ffs Avvy.
Gerrard, Lucas, Henderson, Agger, Skrtel, and Suarez were not in our team.
That and we made 11 substitutions at half time.

The performance and the result aren't so important, but I do hope glaring weaknesses evident can be rectified..and not with another central midfielder. And whislt they're not important,I think its wrong to be dismissive of them entirely,we say the same thing every season, and every season we go on to have a bad year.Things will be better once everyones back but we shdnt gloss over problems. Aside from Johnson and Kelly, that was pretty much our first choice backline, for example.

It certainly wasn't amateur in it's expedient completion before training started, and it was silly to suggest that we are amateur hasty even but it is debatable as to whether we have spent well. Time will tell. Because our spending spree seemed so well planned I am still hoping that we also have targets in mind for other areas of the pitch which remain thin, up front and at the back, nobody flashy or expensive will be bought so those hoping for Aguero or Mata are dreaming.

As for the signings we have made, judging by the level of player we have brought in, it looks like we are going for a staged attempt over a number of years to win the title. We did over-pay but obviously the management team have bought in what they feel we needed to get into the top 4. It makes sense and is a good plan but having spent so big on players who with the best will in the world are not exactly mouthwatering its still a big gamble.

We've shelled out huge bucks we haven't bought anything really special which maybe we would like to give us a good chance but at the same time we are definitely better equipped going into the new season than we were last. Hopefully with the footy Kenny and Clarke got them playing last season and with the ownership clouds gone we do have a reasonable chance.

I hope it works out right I really do because having paid the best part of 50M on players FSG have a right to expect a return and nobody is immune to expensive failure, even Kenny, and regardless of who we've actually bought you cant knock either the owners or the manager for being tight or for being slow!

Part of me can see it going really well next season and us playing well and finishing high in the table, please God, but it's true to say that we still don't have enough qualiy in the first eleven to outmatch our competitors and I really wanted us to buy in one special player to give us a little bit more of an edge. I suppose it's natural to worry about such things though.
