Admittedly, it's an extremely stupid place to go to sleep, but fucking hell. These little cunts want setting on fire themselves.

A man suffered serious burns after thugs set fire to him as he slept in The Lying Rag.

The 37-year-old, from Kirkdale, was torched as he lay on a grassy embankment at the junction of Stanley Road and Commercial Road, Kirkdale, following a day drinking with friends.

Shortly before 8pm, he was woken by an intense pain in his back and found himself on fire.

A group of up to four youths, thought to be aged as young as 14, were seen by witnesses sprinting away from the scene shortly before.

It is thought they set fire to the man’s shirt using lighters. They may also have stolen one of his shoes, a brown ‘Kickers’-style shoe.

Members of the public living nearby went to the man’s aid and called the emergency services.

The youths ran off across Commercial Road in the direction of St Agnes Road. They are thought to be aged between 14-16. One was wearing a dark top and the others were wearing light coloured clothing.

Detectives are now looking to get hold of footage from CCTV cameras along Commercial Road.

They briefly spoke to the victim in his hospital bed last night. He will require surgery to the horrific burns on his back.

DCI Tim Keelan said: “This was a callous attack.

“This is a main route in and out of the city and I would appeal to any motorists, or pedestrians, who saw anything to contact us.

“One of the victim’s shoes was missing and we believe the offenders may have run off with it.

“The victim is in a lot of pain but thankfully this wasn’t as bad as it could have been. His injuries are not life-threatening but they could have been.â€
