LIVERPOOL are ready to rival Arsenal in the battle to sign Bordeaux’s highly-rated striker Marouane Chamakh.

The Moroccan striker has been the subject of much speculation this season and is keen on a move to the Premier League determined to eager to sign a pre-contract.

Chamakh has long been linked with a move to Arsenal but the Gunners have not followed up their initial interest yet with a firm bid and that has alerted Rafa Benitez.

It is no secret the Liverpool manager wants to add to his strike force and Chamakh, a highly-rated 25-year-old, has ticks in all the right boxes, especially as he is on a Bosman.

He is eager for his future to be sorted out sooner rather than later – preferably during this transfer window – and the Reds are ready to give him a chance in the Premier League.

Chamakh’s contract with Bordeaux runs out this summer and he is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs during January.

If Liverpool were to be successful in the pursuit for his signature, however, he would not move to Anfield until the end of the current campaign.

One man who is due on board much earlier than that is Maxi Rodriguez and, all things being equal, the Argentine flier should complete his move in the next 24 hours.

Rodriguez, who is relishing the chance to link up with old Atletico Madrid team-mate Fernando Torres, will cost Liverpool £1.5m; he will sign an 18-month contract.

The Reds, meanwhile, are still awaiting official confirmation that Andrea Dossena’s move to Napoli and Andriy Voronin’s £1.5m switch to Dinamo Moscow have gone through.

Ryan Babel’s future, meanwhile, remains the topic of some debate, with Birmingham still keen on landing the Holland forward, even though Benitez said after Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Reading he has no plans to offload. Babel is understood to prefer a move to the continent if he leaves the Reds – Galatasary’s Dutch manager Frank Rijkaard is an admirer – but the player’s agent, Winnie Haatrecht, has revealed a switch to St Andrew’s is not out of the question.

Haatrecht said: “We know that Liverpool is seriously thinking about the offer from Birmingham. We would consider a deal if both clubs come to an agreement.

“In general Ryan wants to succeed at Liverpool, but if the people at Anfield conclude it’s better he leaves, we have to think about the next chapter.

“We will look then to the team, the perspectives of the club, as well as a meeting with the manager.â€

Surely at 25 its not really a question of developing talent. Besides, with Arsenal he's not going to get much of a look when Van Persie is back in the swing of things. Of the two I suspect Torres presents better opportunities to their understudies.

a) let's hope he doesn't end up like the last player arsenal really wanted but missed out on due to us (Babel)
b) is he really that good? He's skillful but his goalscoring record isn't anything special

We can only afford that much for the time being, scrapping what is left on the table or dropped from the table.

I'm not convinced Wenger desperately wanted to Babel anyway - only that he was being scouted.

As for this link, I think it sounds promising. From what I've seen Chamakh is a decent player and a substantial improvement on are current squad options. The fact Arsenal are interested is another decent sign, providing we land him. His goal record was unimpressive until a last season, but since then he's averaged a goal every other game indicating that now would be the right time to make a move.

Rafa's wheeling & dealing looks pretty good so far, but I'd question the logic in not paying a few million to sign him up right now.

He looks intent on waiting his last 6 months out and Bordeaux have been asking for a silly price in the hope that someone will bite. Maybe that will change towards the end of Jan, who knows.

My next door neighbour is a French Arsenal/Marseilles fan and he has been raving about this guy for a while now and reckons he'll be a huge star in the EPL.

I don't know why we're raving over a striker with a 1 in 4 goal scoring record. There's only one person qualified to tell us how good/shit he is.

BUNNYMANNNNNNN !!!! Ou est vous ?

Where the fuck IS Bunny ???

Don´t think that Wenger wanted Babel in the end. It could be the same for Chamakh.

The Guardian are all over this link too.

He's a very promising young player. I've seen bits of him, and he looks the stuff.

Would we be interested if he wasn't gratis?

We should always be interested in this type of player (exciting, skillful, pacy) but i'm sure the freebie makes the deal even more inviting.
He just won the French league and Cup double and is attracting attention from clubs all over Europe apparently. I read an article a while back whihc touted him as a player destined for the premiership, along with Fabiano and a few others.

Is he playing in the African cup of nations? We could see more of him there. My only concern is his poor goal ratio!!

I'll just have to take y'alls word on this one because from what I recall, he was crap when I saw him play. Can't be that bad to have all these clubs after him though, eh?

Where is B-Man when you need him?

There is a lot of buzz about him. As I said his goal ratio is a bit worrying and the fact he is in his mid 20's already, but on free he would hugely improve our squad.

I've developed a sort of pavlovian response to bosmans. I reckon I could quit smoking if I could somehow associate cigarettes with bosmans.

Good player, technically gifted.

He might be too lightweight for the premiership though.

He's 6ft 1"

Voronin's wife could act as Pavlov’s dogs in your conditioning experiments.

Check his weight. He's very thin.
He would struggle a lot against physical defenders.

Like Ryan Babel circa '07.
