Liverpool's owners have opened talks with manager Jurgen Klopp over a new contract.

Klopp's current deal runs until 2018 with the option of a further 12 months and Fenway Sports Group are keen to get him tied down for the long-term.

FSG president Mike Gordon has instigated discussions with Klopp and his representatives and no issues are anticipated.

The German coach is relishing the job he took on last October and he's expected to pen an extension over the coming weeks.

Assistant coaches Zeljko Buvac and Peter Krawietz will also be rewarded with new deals.

The ECHO understands that FSG have been “blown away” by Klopp's impact at Anfield over the past nine months.

They were convinced he was the perfect fit for Liverpool when they secured his services as Brendan Rodgers' successor and that belief has been strengthened after he led the club to the final of both the Capital One Cup and the Europa League.

Klopp has also bought into how FSG want Liverpool to be run by developing young talent on the training field and his relationship with the American owners is strong.

Gordon, principal owner John W Henry and chairman Tom Werner view Klopp as a “world class operator” and the new long-term deal underlines their trust and confidence in him to bring success to Anfield.

The owners opted to make their move now to ensure the coming season isn't blighted by speculation about Klopp's future.

FSG want the 49-year-old to stay around long enough to do for Liverpool what he did for both Mainz and Borussia Dortmund in his homeland.

Klopp is already one of the Premier League's highest paid managers on around £5million per year.

The new contract won't involve a major pay hike with discussions merely focused on the length of the deal.

Excellent news.

Interesting times indeed. I hope that Klopp will be allowed to decide if we should appoint a DoF and or a Sporting director. Let him build up the club the way he want and we will soon be one of the best clubs in the world again.

Erm... Im a fan and all but apart from losing two cup finals and finishing mid table what Has he done to deserve a new contract less than a year in?

It's hardly the attitude of winning side, rewarding potential and mediocrity*

**I reserve the right to recant the above should we tear shit up big time next season

I was wondering the same thing myself.

It's one thing doing it in Germany when you've basically one team (albeit a great one) to overtake but it's another in the Premier League where you've 5 at least...3 or 4 of them Clubs with massive resources at that.

Not discrediting the job he did at Dortmund, it was very very impressive but we're being a little naive if we think he can do the exact same at Liverpool in the Premier League....it's not impossible at all but I am worried it's not all going to go to plan....this buying loads of kids and developing them approach.

It's not all just about the results though, I think it's clear that Klopp has really become the face of the club since he arrived, and I reckon behind the scenes he's been a massive positive, leading presence. Whereas Rodgers just seemed like the LFC coach and not too much more, Klopp really seems like he's running the club behind the scenes and is getting involved at all levels, and I reckon the owners absolutely love it, and that's why they want to tie him down, they can see he's a world class operater who is improving this club at all levels.

The job he did at Dortmund was a bit more than very very impressive. He more or less built up the club himself. From more or less bankrupt to one of the best clubs in the world.

He isn't only a fantastic motivator. He is a very very clever guy. I don't know if you will be able to find a better squad and club builder than him. He know how handle big egos and team players.

I do think that the timing is a little bit weird. They could have waited until next summer without any problem at all. No risk that he would walk out. He want to finish his projects. I do wonder if it could have anything to do with a takeover. If you secure a manager like Klopp on a long term deal then the club will be worth more.

Expanded Anfield, excellent manager on a long term deal, young promising squad, finances on the way up, not that many players on big contracts if Benteke and Balotelli leaves a loan to the club that will be repaid when the club is sold.

While I can see why some have concerns, I'm delighted we are giving him the long term backing.

We aren't going to be champions overnight and there is nobody available I would prefer in charge than Klopp.

Do these cunts get dressed with their eyes closed? Literally not one item of clothing either of them is wearing actually fits them. That's quite an achievement.

Well he's got us to two finals with his predecessors squad and had very limited time to train the players. We all universally agree that Klopp is the best thing at this club by a mile at the minute and yet people question why we want to tie him down without paying him more.. I think we extremely fortunate to have someone of us calibre at the club at the minute and the fact that the owners are impressed with his day to day running of the club says it all. It's good news.

Except he didnt. The CEO and the DOF along with Klopp were major contributors to the growth of Dortmund. Klopp's body of work at Dortmund is impressive. No need to exaggerate it.

If you're as weird a shape as Werner, that's probably for the best. And if you look at the angle of Mike Gordon's left foot, he looks as if he's reprising the big reveal at the end of The Usual Suspects.

You get the horrible feeling that Klopp is really our last hope at a return to greatness (unless we're bought by a rich Arab, that is).

So much seems to hinge on him being a success. I don't even want to think about our level of mediocrity if Klopp fails and moves on.

It's really important we keep all three - Klopp and his assistants. That chemistry is crucial. The last two occasions when we looked as if we were set to really progress, with Houllier and Benitez, their right hand men left and they were never the same again.

Offering a new contract is usually the start of things going pear shaped. I would have liked us to hold off a while more.

Nah, not with it expeiring in 2018. This is a good move and brings stability into the club.
If we have a great season and he enters the final year of his contract then that could put us in a difficult situation.

This way he can continue to work with a long term plan.

Whilst there have been improvments in the cups, our league form was pretty shocking.

We collapsed at west ham, watford saints.

And he gambled on EC and now we have no Europe.

Did he not originally sign a 3 1/2 year deal bringing him to 2019? Either way I wouldn't have the contract stretching any more than 4 years from now. It's too soon into his reign here to have the contract any longer.

He's a top manager and there aren't many of those about. Especially those who can work wonders on a limited budget. Got to two major finals in less than a season with no preseason and a ridiculous amount of bad luck with injuries. Although it's arguable that this is due to his training regime, so maybe that was self induced.
He's transformed some players.
Sign him up.

Think its 2 1/2 years with an option of 1 more year.

With all of the usual disclaimers about Klopp's great, I love Klopp, in Jurgen we trust etc...

His first few months have promised a great deal but relatively speaking delivered very little. That said, I'm all in on the guy. It's still early days and he's been working with the other guy's squad. There's a big and hugely competitive season ahead for us and if this guy can't lead us to the promised land I'm not sure anyone could. So for that reason, I'm in.

Great news. It is about time the Shanks and Paisley in the clouds image was reprised with Klopp replacing the pretender Rogers.

Because he's a world class manager and if not him them who? He's the best we're going to get for a VERY long time. We want him tied down for as long as possible and let him rebuild us from the ground up. If Klopp fails then we're fucked because the next manager would be a step down...guaranteed.

Yeah, that's how I feel. With the current owners it's a bit miraculous we have Klopp at all.

But how do you define 'fail'? Because I'm not sure Klopp or anyone can win the league under FSG.

I suppose we can point to Leicester (a galactic anomaly) or the second place under Rodgers, but you look at our squad, and who we are buying compared to Chelsea, United, City etc, and the thread about where we will finish says it all

Maybe 6th.

Bigger question is: how long will Klopp give it before he moves on?

And when the time comes, where would he go? I can't imagine him moving to another English club. Dortmund's a possibility if things don't end well with us. Bayern? Can't see him at Madrid or Barcelona. His style doesn't suit Italy but I could see him in France at PSG. And then there's the German national team.

Where he goes next will depend on how long he's with us which will in turn depend on how it goes. If he's successful over the next trhee years I can see him staying here for 10. If he isn't where does he go?

That was my point.

The turnover of managers at clubs like Barca, Real, Juve, PSG, Chelsea, United, Bayern, City, Inter etc would suggest there will usually be an opening somewhere for a top manager somewhere.

Especially if they're hanging around jobless, like Klopp, Guardiola, Ancelotti and Mourinho were
