LIVERPOOL FC OFFICIAL STATEMENT
Paul Eaton 14 June 2009
Liverpool Football Club has today released the following statement.
"Despite repeated media speculation on the futures of Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano, Liverpool has received no official approach or offer from any club regarding the players.

"Neither is for sale and furthermore Liverpool has no interest in the long list of Spanish based players being linked with a move to Anfield as part of any deal."

That's two lines long. One line longer than we normally get from the club, & incredibly quick & clear. Makes a change.

Its says we do not want to sell but it doesn't put any story to bed. If it was statements from the players saying they wanted to stay fair enough. I don't think this statement soes anything other than make either players look like they instigated the moves if they are sold. I remember a few weeks back it being said that Benitez will play the politics game and make it look that Alonso wanted out. Maybe this is the first step.

Well, what more can the club do if the players are determined to leave? Putting some pressure on them can't harm in this case, can it?

Apart from where it says 'neither player is for sale'?

You can't put media speculation to bed as they'll continue to print shite regardless, but it's good that we are reaffirming our position.

It more or less does put it to bed though, both Xabi and Mascher have got 3 years + on their contracts, they aren't going anywhere this year, if Rafa doesn't want them to.

It's a bit unusual to officially deny random speculation, isn't it?

Hope it's true anyways. I desperately want both to stay.

Well exactly. Rafa has set his stall out and is either bluffing to get a bigger fee or is telling the truth and doesn't want to sell and won't. I believe it's the latter.

Contracts in modern day football don't really tie a footballer to a club, they just determine how much the fee will be. Not many years left a small fee plenty of years a large fee. How many times do you see a player power force a move these days. Liverpool are just throwing the gauntlet down to both players you want to leave come out and say. Liverpool and Benitez then don't look like the bad guys more so in Alonsos case.

By the way i don't think Benitez wants to sell Mascherano, but i do think he wants rid of alonso. But the season he has just had makes it very difficult for him. We the fans would go mental, that is why i think the club and Benitez may have put this statement out.

No of course they don't. Good grief.

True, but someone has to come out and put a lid on these shite stories. Enough is enough.

I applaud the club. Nice work.

Take your bids and shove em. And should you push it and the player forces a sale, its CASH ONLY, non of your fucking cast offs. Stat.

Fucking hell, does the title need to be in capitals?

I heard it from my garden, so yes. ;D

That's certainly how it looks.

I'd be surprised if most people don't think it's Xabi looking to get out at this stage. So maybe the statement from him wouldn't be necessary ?

The current situation needs resolving soon, if he is to go we need to get a replacement in relatively quickly.

Sorry i just C&P it from the official.

it means we can hold on to them for a year at least but if players want to push for a move there is nothing you can do

Man Utd sold Ronaldo for fucks sake.

At least it means that if they do go it will be on our terms and we will not be accepting Nunez like dross as part exchange

Another season with that CM is not to be sneezed at. It would enable us, potentially, to win the league, and give us a whole season to scout good replacements. Selling both our CMs this summer would be a huge setback. At worst, we should sell one and keep the other.

Correctomundo. What are they going to do, refuse to play?

Try me.

And Yossi. And Dossena. And Babel.

Amazing that no one's been linked to Dirk this summer, after the season he's just had...

it really depends though on the character, unlike Chelsea and United players ours tend not to be twats but they can still push for a move, hand in a request, down tools etc

It means we are waiting for them to offer us someone who is not Spanish.

If a truly good offer comes in for either player and Rafa consents, they'll be gone
