Liverpool close to securing £124m of new investment

• George Gillett meets investors over selling £124m share
• Liverpool's debt reportedly stands at around £240m

Jacob Steinberg guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 16 December 2009 01.48 GMT Article history

The Liverpool co-owner George Gillett held talks with potential investors in London last week over selling a share of Liverpool for around £124m.

A list of around half a dozen investors has been compiled, according to the Daily Telegraph, who would offer Gillett and his co-owner Tom Hicks around £62m each for a share in the club.

Liverpool's debt currently stands at around £240m, while plans to develop a new stadium remain stalled. Last month Gillett sold the Montreal Canadiens for £333m although it is not thought likely any of the money will go into Liverpool.

Fixed. If this investment doesn't prompt swift movement on the stadium, and is simply a way of addressing the debt, I will cry.

What? RBS become shareholders?

I am afraid the sale of shares will be used to address the debts!

No, I meant that's where the money is going. And of course it will be used to address the debt, but hopefully with a view to actually progressing things.

Sounds like a Roadshow to be honest; nothing wrong with that but a long way from a closed deal.

Any investment will have to be first used to meet minimum repayments for the near future but I'd be amazed if it doesn't also go to funding the new stadium. I can't imagine any investor coughing up on any other basis and once that's in place nothing else matters; the stadium has to start or H&G are personally liable to the investors.

United Arab Emirates' ruling family set to buy into cash-strapped Liverpool

Liverpool could be set for a badly-needed cash boost from the ruling family of the United Arab Emirates.

According to reports from the Middle East, members of the Ras al-Khaimah family are seeking talks with the club's owners to discuss possible investments.

They want American co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks to fly to the UAE to open negotiations about buying into the ailing club.

A senior official close to the Ras al-Khaimahs said representatives from Liverpool "may be coming next week".

Ian Cotton, Liverpool's director of communications, refused to be drawn on the reports, saying: "At the moment, we are not commenting on this speculation."

Liverpool would welcome investment as the club's borrowings stand at £313m.

Just last week manager Rafa Benitez had said that managing the club's huge debts was proving to be difficult.

Hicks and Gillett have been courting investment from the Middle East for months and Gillett recently visited Saudi Arabia.

Ras al-Khaimah's royal family is the latest Gulf investor to be linked with Liverpool and in September, Saudi Prince Faisal Bin Fahd Al Saud was said to be keen to invest, but nothing came of the interest.

They are on record as saying the new investment is to pay down the debt (so that they can get more debt for the stadium).

Why didn't the ManCity owners buy us instead? D:

Actually on second thoughts.. I'd rather not have other people saying we're successful just because we're freakishly rich.

haha. Just about.

if we fail to make the top 4 this year then the yanks really do need to invent in the team because it will be difficult to return to the top four without it.
a huge investment in the team would also show the likes of torres we mean business as well.

Tom Hicks club takes step closer to selling Major League Baseball franchise

LIVERPOOL co-owner Tom Hicks today moved a step closer to selling his Major League Baseball franchise – in a move that could free up funds at Anfield.

Hicks found a number of interested bidders for the Texas Rangers, and late last night selected a group led by Pittsburgh lawyer Chuck Greenberg to enter exclusive negotiations.

Hicks now has 30 days to agree a deal with Greenberg before submitting plans to MLB for approval. The banks that hold Hicks’ debt must also approve.

The deal would see the Hicks family retain a small share of the team which could fetch up to £300m.

In a statement, Hicks said: “Our family has chosen to negotiate with the group we believe will be best to protect and ensure the long-term positive future of this franchise. We understand that this is more than a transaction. You never really own a baseball team; you just have the right to be the trustee of a public institution.â€

Hicks has been working to sell the Rangers due to the debts held by his Hicks Sports Group, which defaulted on debts attached to the Rangers and Dallas Stars hockey back in May.

Earlier this month, Liverpool’s other co-owner George Gillett completed a deal to sell the Montreal Canadiens NHL franchise but is yet to invest any of the £333m into Liverpool.

If thats true, then they've done well to keep most of those interested parties from being named.

It's encouraging that the owners could have sold us to fund other things, but seem to be doing the opposite. That says something about where they think their best prospects of making money are. Now if we can just persuade them that they need to speculate to accumulate....

Honestly Hicks is a savvy (not rich enough to be a) sports team owner. I think he agrees with the philosophies of you get what you pay for and you have to spend money to make money. Maybe they truly desire to be (new) Anfield legends as opposed to being on Anfields most hated list. and if they deliver us into a time of trophies galore...
