Attack
Liverpool have shown in the last few matches of 2013 that we do not rely on a strong traditional striker, I think it is a certainty that there will be at least one strong forward joining, probably Costa, and that will IMO give Liverpool strong and varied options in attack.
Arsenal need a top striker, but they seem to have all their eggs in the Suarez basket) that much is clear. They look the weakest of these 3 squads in comparison. Spurs will be relying on Soldado to be an instant hit, Adebayor can not lead the line all season alone, he’s not that good, so will Soldado be a hit or miss ? For a Bale-less Spurs that is probably the key to their season.

Midfield
This is where Arsenal have an embarrassment of riches and have been relying on their contribution to add to their goal tally, with some success. However without Wilshere they do tend to struggle. Spurs lack creativity in their midfield and will be relying on Holtby to instill some fire and Sigursson to improve on last season’s form and live up to the hype. Liverpool have some quality players – if they perform to their potential and Henderson continues his dramatic improvement and Lucas returns to his best. Lots of ‘ifs, buts and maybes’ there.

Defence

Arsenal really should be shoring up their defence rather than paying nig money for Suarez. It looks clearly to be the weakest in depth of these 3 squads. Spurs have an experienced defence with some sound players and an exceptional FB in Walker.

Keepers
Whilst Liverpool look to have secured the strongest keeper of the 6 they will need to keep him fit as in their reserve keeper is reliable but not as strong as their competitors.

Conclusions
I’ve assumed that Bale and Parker will leave Spurs. Also Skrtel, Assaidi and Downing to leave Liverpool if they don’t it just strengthens the squad further.

At Liverpool there looks to be more flexibility, creativity and rotation of players across the forward line than at either Arsenal or Spurs, and we have seen in the second half of last season how this can be beneficial.
Despite the potential loss of Suarez (which may now not happen and hence he has been reinstalled to the squad) the Liverpool team looks well balanced (maybe even better balanced than their immediate competitors) with lots of options. Those 3 bolded potential recruitments are key though and their arrival could spur the confidence needed after the Suarez debacle. IMHO by far the most important of those potential signings is Papa.

Arsenal in comparison look weaker in attack than they should be as none of their current strike force are consistent or strike fear by reputation alone, and their defence is surely cause for some concern.
Spurs really look like they will need to spend that huge cheque from RM to replace Bale – in a number of positions. With central defence, a winger and another attacker key.

None of these teams look capable of breaking into the Top 3, so it is between them for 4th. If Liverpool can continue their progression and secure their targets before the transfer window closes they can still challenge strongly for 4th.

We'll lose Suarez and won't replace him. I've said this transfer window will be a shit one for us and I'm sticking to it. We'll leapfrog Everton league position wise but that'll be as good as it gets.

Like I've said time and time again, central midfield really isn't the most important area on the ground.

Not one side in the premier league has a world class central midfield pairing.

Considering we are openly bidding 20m+ for Costa I doubt that is true.

I don't see the point in comparing squads.

We only play Arsenal twice and the results of those games are not gonna make much difference, imo.

It's all about how we do against the teams outside the top 6.

14 teams, two games per team, 3 points, that's 84 points.

Que ?

So how Arsenal and Spurs perform has no bearing on the outcome of where we finish in the PL ? Of what points totals we are aiming for for 4th ? WTF are you smoking Modo !

As for those two matches not making any difference .. would 6 pts less for them and 6 pts more for us (or vice versa) make no difference ? Fucking hell.

Whatever Wenger is smoking.

The squad that we have is good enough for a top 4 fight. What we have to mostly improve is our self belief, mentality and consistency.

We need the players to show up, show some bottle and fight for that Liverbird.

The problem with these types of comparisons (well, besides the obvious objectivity issues) is that it ignores the fact that you can't really judge a team solely based on it's individual components.

Both Arsenal and Spurs enjoy teams that are greater than the sum of their parts. Unfortunately we do not - not unless something changes this year.

Except that Spurs have just (or about to) lose Bale - a massive component in their cogs. Arsenal have not, and don't look likely to, strengthen beyond the faint hope of Suarez and this coming season their weaknesses could be exposed by teams stronger than last season (Chelsea, City and, dare I say, us - transfer coups willing).

We do seem to be making strides on the 'team' concept too. We have looked impressive at times over the second half of last season.

I believe so too at the moment. Lose Suarez and we need to replace him with Costa or A.N.Other of a similar perceived quality. This coming season it's going to be more about the team/squad than the last two. If we gel ... and we've certainly strengthened the squad .. then we are in with a big shout.

What you say could be true. The flipside however is that both teams finished more than 10pts ahead of us and just as we're looking to build upon their progress from last season so will they and they have a headstart.

I think we're reliant on significant improvement from the likes of Allen, a couple of great signings as well as the continuing good form of the likes of Coutinho to bridge the gap.

We're trading in lots of ifs. I hope it all comes together for us but the past has unfortunately taught me to pretty cynical.

Losing Suarez at the end of last season unleashed the beast in us. That Newcastle drubbing stands out. Coutinho, Sturridge, Aspas and Gerrard will get us goals. We definately need another top striker (Benteke or Lukaku would do nicely please), a right winger and a dominant CB to complete the squad.

A fit Sturridge can challenge for the golden boot.

Our midfield is truly terrible...

Central midfield?

This does my tits in.

United - Carrick, Powell, Cleverley, Anderson.
Chelsea - Mikel, Ramires, Essien, Romeu, Lampard
Arsenal - Arteta, Wilshere, Ramsey, Diaby
Spurs - Parker, Dembele, Huddlestone, Sandro, someone else
City - Barry, Toure, Rodwell, Garcia, what else?

Not one side in the premier league has got a top drawer central midfield. Not one side has even got a top class midfield partnership in there.
There are some elements of quality - Carrick, Toure, Wilshere - but mostly it's a collection of makeweight shite no better or worse than what we've got.
So stop complaining about it.

Arsenal clearly seem to have the best CM options, however I don't think we are behind the other squads at all (Gerrard, Henderson, Allen, Lucas) especially if Allen & Lucas can return to form and Henderson continue his progression from last season.
