RAFAEL BENITEZ has revealed the extent of his budgetary worries by suggesting he might not be given any money raised by selling Ryan Babel to reinvest in the transfer market and conceding, for the first time, that he is not certain his club’s hierarchy would reject a “silly money†bid for Fernando Torres.

Whether it is true or not, it is depressing. I don't ever recall LFC ever to have sell players to balance the books. Evarrr.

Repeated by Bascombe in NOTW

Interesting points:

Rafa didn't say he couldn't have the £8M from flogging Babel - he asked who he could get for £8m that would be better.

Of the first 21 players Benitez signed for Liverpool, only three - Pepe, Fabio and Agger - are still at the club.

If I were a cynic I would probably think that it an attempt on Rafa's part to manipulate public opinion in his favour, in the ongoing propaganda war between himself and the owners.

I must be a cynic then because if any sort of quote did come from Rafa, that's exactly what I'd read into it.

Sadly that was my first thought too.

Yes Benitez, if YOU don't qualify for the CL, then WE will have to sell Torres as a result of your shit management decisions. Idiot

Another piece of machiavellian game from our manager.
Thats the really last doubt I have about him...
What is he trying to achieve?

What did he say that has you so riled?

Any club that gets a 100M pound bid for a player will discuss it. To suggest otherwise is madness.

I agree with that.
Why is he saying it publicly?

If this is one of Benitez's silly little media games he should be careful. They haven't worked out so well in the past have they?

Well his quit threat ensured a 5 year, powerful contract - the reason we can no longer remove him.

But yeah, on a footballing note: point taken.

Maybe because it's true? without the CL income how are we going to pay his wages?

the players will have to accept paycuts or be sold if we're not in the CL

We could cope with 1 season out of the CL, more than that not so much.

Not being in the CL would be a disaster. What hasn't helped is our pathetic showing in this year's CL though.

We all know that you hate Benitez and waste no time or opportunity to criticise or condemn him. You've posted many, many critique's over many many months. But a Swiss hating a Spaniard in charge of an English team because of a comment during an interview suggests you may have become unbalanced and are beginning to believe the paranoia your twisted brain keeps coming up with.

Give it a rest fella, for your blood pressure at least.

Any sensible Manager in receipt of a massive offer for a player has to consider it.

He's not talking about offers for Torres tho; he's talking about Rafa making it look like another case of sofas and lampshades..

Our failed season is completely causd by the lack of suport from the 2 morons...a fate many on here share.

Never mind the rubbish we've bought, and his inability to motivate the players to actually want to win games.

Once again, I dont hate Benitez. I dont think his management skills are good enough for our club and its obvious he will never bring us the title.
Its not just a comment, he's been doing this for years now...Apparently my opinion was shared by many posters, its not paranoia.
He's fooling less and less people but again Im wondering...
What is he really trying to achieve?
getting the sack and £10M?
Someone had a point actually, he fooled the yanks and got a huge contract, Is he trying to fool them again?
I blamed the yanks for giving him such a contract but thats enough, they should tell him to shut up and focus on getting 4th spot.

So, three articles all headlining a statement that is not supported by a single piece of fact in any article.

Yet people still manage to get themselves into tangle over it.

As for the comment on Torres - any club would consider a 100m offer; the mancs certainly looked long and hard at one which fell some 20m short. Having said that they seemed resigned to losing Ronaldo for a couple of years - why Benitez would talk about that in public is strange.

I don't think there is anything in those articles whatsover.

That said, it seems fairly inevitable that City will weigh in with a monster bid at some point, and the likelihood is that we will accept it.

Because he was asked the question I would suggest.

Our manager isn't good enough to compensate for the loss of Fernando Torres.
