24 million v 18 million

Ok, one is a Centre back and another is a Wing back.

Discuss who gives better value for money?

(Discount the fact they are overpriced British)

Ugly is better at defending, GJ is better at going forward and offers more to attacks. Our team needed the latter.

I think a 'defender' who can offer more going forward also is more valuable in the market.

imho johnson has better technique and is better with the ball at his feet, lescott is more of a threat at set pieces and is better at defending.

Johnson wins hands down. He is younger and already (I think) has more international cap than JL.

GJ is good going forward, assists in goals from the wings, reasonably quick. He will contribute to scoring goals too, giving width when team plays compact in the midfield.

JL, though solid at the back may also score on set pieces with goal mouth scrambles.
But 24 million for a CB?

I am happier with our capture, in comparison with the price dished out for JL.

They are both excellent players but Lescott is not worth more. All transfers this season have been inflated due to Man City/Real Madrid's ridiculous transfer policies and at those inflated prices I would suggest Johnson's price was correct but Lescott should not have been valued at more than £15m/£16m.

I agree, there is more value in a player who is more able to score or assist in scoring.

Johnson wins hands down. He is younger and already (I think) has more international cap than JL.

GJ is very good going forward, assists in goals from the wings, reasonably very quick. He will contribute to scoring goals too, giving width when team plays compact in the midfield.

JL, though solid at the back may also score on set pieces with goal mouth scrambles.
But 24 million for a CB?

I am MUCH happier with our capture, in comparison with the price dished out for JL.

Good enough for me with the small corrections.

LOL, lazy so & so....

Pesam: if both of them at the same price (forget about the inflated transfers this window), who would you buy?

We needed a Johnson-type player far more than a Lescott-type so definitely GJ.

I think it depends on how you choose to look at it - taken completely out of context, based purely on their own merits, Johnson is by far the better deal IMO. As much as I like him, I still think £18M was a touch much - but he is young, talented and English and by all accounts the best right back in the league last seaon.

Lescott is older, not as talented, and although he's been in good form he certainly wasn't the best centre back in the league, and isn't likely to ever be.

Looked at like that, with Lescott costing £6M than an already overpriced GloJo, it's a no-brainer.

However, I think if you were to put it into context, taking into consideration our needs and position vs Citeh's then it becomes a different matter. City needed a decent CB almost as much as we needed to replace Arby, in fact arguably perhaps more so - undoubtedly we needed a new RB, but it's not like that was the only position we needed to fill, there are still significant areas we need to work on. City had sorted most of their problem positions and were really only weak at the back, especially in the middle.

Essentially, if the reports are to be believed and we are done with the spending and the cash has run out, we've pretty much blown half of the seasonal budget on Johnson, compared to Citeh who probably only allocated a small percentage towards securing Lescott, who is a big improvement to them.

Looked at through their eyes, they've got the much better deal

Lescott's good, but he's not 24m good.

He's not even 15m good.

City got raped.

They could have bought almost any defender in world football for that money, not that they necessarily would have joined City so I don't really know what I'm saying anymore.

Haha, you must be an accountant picking percentage spent. Lol

What if they still fall behind us in the table after that kind of spending?

Like they care Ross. They paid 13 million for Toure with one year on his contract and 17 for De Jong who would have been free in 12 months time.

^^

Also, taking into account that City are most likely looking for a top 6 finish this year, 24m for a good player and at the same time weakening your direct competition is a decent bit of business.

We'll become a better team with Johnson.

Wouldn't be the case with Lescott.
