Persevere with Insua?
Give Aurelio a run?
(Gulps) See if Dossena can stake a claim?
Take a chance on Kelly?

With Agger back in the side giving us a more solid, composed feel to the backline and Carra hopefully recovering his form, I'd be happy enough to let Insua continue for now. He had a poor game today but it didn't cost us, and he's done enough in other games to make me think he's got the tools to continue an upward curve. The only way he'll improve is for experience and should Rafa continue with Aurelio ahead of him he'll get plenty of cover on the left.

I wouldn't mind seeing kelly stake a claim to be his back-up in the carling cup game.

Insua doing well.

But I think he gave Valencia too much room today, especially in the first half.

Has to work on his pace.

I think Aurelio is a better LB and should play the big games. Insua is decent back-up for the matches against the lower teams. I didn't see the game today, but I don't think he's been generally terrible this season, as some people seem to be saying; most of the time he's rated a 6 or above. He shouldn't be first-choice for us, but as you say he's young and can still improve.

Is that a joke? Pace is one of those things that you can't really 'work on'.

There is not an awful lot between Aurelio and Insua as defenders. Aurelio may just edge it when he is on a hot streak (usually just before getting injured again), but Insua is slightly more consistent.

I have a question of my own.

Is Aurelio a better option than Rierra on the left? They both are very inconsistent unfortunately but with Aurelio in there we have a set-piece specialist and a good crosser/passer of the ball.

How do you "work on" pace?

Plyometrics.

Lose Weight

Aurelio over Babel; Does this mean Babel is out of favour or we were merely sticking to a game plan of keeping the left flank solid? he was left out of the Lyon game as well wasn't he?

If Babel is out of favour, it would surprise me if we're not in for another winger this January window, we NEED a pacy trickster to take the burden off Torres.

I dont think that Insua is as bad as is being made out on here, although he has been through a poor spell of late. I believe that he misses the cover that Reira gave him and he looked a better player when teamed up alonside Albert.
That said I would start Aurilio for the moment as he is still the better player overall right now, but hopefully that wont always be the case if Insua, who is only twenty continues to improve.

If we are not going to use Babel, Reirra and Dossena meaningfully....then we need to ship them out as fast as we can. We are not a mega rich club....

I don't really think there is much of a decision to make. Aurelio is needed as a LM option for the time being and generally speaking can only really alternate with Insua at the back anyways due to being made of glass .

As for improving on pace, I think Insua actually can - he just needs to learn to stop getting so tight to attackers and therefore giving them a few yard headstart when they turn him.

Insua should not play in the big games but then we would have to play another waster like Babel right now so it's a tough one isnt it?

Brendan had it right in another thread.

Neither Insua nor Aurelio are good enough defenders in their own right for our team. The only reason Insua didn't cost us that game was the hard work of Aurelio and Mascherano in tracking back and covering him.

Continue with Insua. He is improving and will get better with more game time and experience. Aurelio is always a tackle away from injury.

No, it's not a joke - what the hell you on about mate?

Can work on improving your pace through many ways.

Through short sharp sprint exercises...... to the technique of your running style.... and "pace" can be improved through improving your positioning.

Pace does not just refer to your ability to run fast, it means other things - EG: the pace at which your mind reads play --> positioning.

Shocker today from Insua, with a fullback in front of him to protect him. He needs to raise the bar as it is a position we actually have some poshibilities in.

you deal with what you have not what you wish you had and aurelio is better than insua thus he should play. when aurelio breaks down again, as he will then we'll play insua.

Rafa had it spot on today. Play Insua with Aurelio in front of him because between them they can cope.

Ideally Riera would be playing in front of one of them.

Yeah, right. So what you really meant when you said 'work on his pace' was 'work on his positioning'. In that case, I agree. But I don't think that is what you really meant.

Improving pace will still only bring about fractions unless he has some Jamaican athletics coach with untraceable substances. He's not gonna suddenly become fast.

insua is not as good as any of us hoped he would be.

he may develop, he may not but if fit aurelio should start ahead of him and maybe we can stick with insua and see if he develops.

right now i'd sell both insua and doseena for an upgrade

As a cash strapped club, we should be relying on our youth. What is this about selling Insua?
