Me and my three mates moved into this house down Smithdown in July 2012. We don't pay the landlord rent for the property. Instead we pay someone called some bint through direct debit. The landlord claims this to be his wife.
The contract states that we are required to pay the council tax on that property. In our time there we haven't had any letters from the council - it's all gone to his mansion in Chester. Now, after being summoned to court, some bint has paid council tax in full for that entire time which amounts to £1827, and now the landlord is trying to get it back off us. We've got proof of payment for that.
I'm not trying to be a scounge, but here's the thing:
- He's avoiding income tax and capital gains tax by not declaring properties and signing them onto different names in his family.
- If he is avoiding income and capital gains tax on his property portfolio, surely any fine imposed would amount to more than the £1456 he's trying to charge us?
- The one-stop shop women said to my housemate 'If it was me, I wouldn't pay him anything'.
Going to citizens advice tomorrow, but any help would be appreciated!

I'm not trying to be a scounge, but here's the thing:
- We went to the one-stop shop and they have no record of us living there.
- The property isn't registered as a rental property.
- We would be eligible for council tax discounts applied to the house because I'm still a student and, possibly because my other housemate was unemployed for 12 months.
- We couldn't have applied for these discounts because, according the council, we don't exist or live there.
