Konchesky: I'm not of Liverpool standard but I'll try

Defender Paul Konchesky has admitted he has not yet reached the level required at Liverpool and accepted full responsibility for yesterday's 2-1 defeat at Tottenham.

The left-back was given a tough time by Aaron Lennon and was caught out of position and found lacking for pace as the winger raced through to score the winner in added time.

Despite an encouraging performance at White Hart Lane, where the Reds dominated the first half and should have led by more at the interval, Konchesky was the one player who came in for criticism.

He acknowledged his culpability against Spurs and stressed his determination to improve.

"I've got to up my game. Where I've played before has not been as high a standard as Liverpool, but this is a good pressure," said the 29-year-old.

"The fans want you to be in the top four because that's where Liverpool belong.

"Straight after (Lennon's winner) I knew that I'd have to hold my hands up, but we also had chances to win the game.

"That's part of football and we've got to try to take the positives out of the game.

"I was gutted (with the winner); being the last minute as well it didn't give us any time to get back into the game.

"But that's life, we've got to put it behind us, and I've got to put it behind myself for the next game."

The former West Ham defender has taken a while to settle having arrived from Fulham in the summer and his integration into the side has not been helped by changes going on within the team.

Roy Hodgson, who brought Konchesky with him from Craven Cottage when he replaced Rafael Benitez as manager, has slowly been instilling his own tactics and performances have dipped as a result.

That has made it harder for the new arrival to slot in as there have been issues to deal with elsewhere.

"I got injured early on so I'm just getting back to playing at full fitness now," Konchesky added.

"I'm getting used to the atmosphere and the people surrounding the team.

"I can see signs that we're starting to play in the style he (Hodgson) wants.

"The more we work on it on the training ground, the more the players get used to what the manager wants.

"We're taking it into games. The performances have been of a much higher standard in the last two games.

"It's about organisation and a lot of hard work. Players filling in for each other when someone's out of position.

"I think the team is becoming organised in the system.
"

At least he knows he is shit.

It will come as less of a surprise when Dantes has his way with him.

No he didn't. Konchesky was always a bog-average left-back. One of those OK-ish PL players who, as soon as they get in the England team, look horribly out of place and one-dimensional. Same sort of standard as Luke Young, Michael Gray, Danny Mills etc.

His attitude in that interview is good. But unfortunately, at 29, it's pretty obvious he's not going to be able to 'up his game'.

Danny Mills was a decent player

Agreed. A 24-carat cnut, but a decent player - and incidentally quite an impressive radio pundit nowadays when they get him on.

Eeeh...can someone help me because I don´t see any style at all!?

he's very average. shows some good qualities but every game also proves that he's not up to this standard. that said, i'd rather spend money elsewhere than on replacing him

Fair play to him for taking responsibility. He's not good enough, he won't get any better but that's not really his fault.

If resources are scarce then we can live with an average left back. One that doesn't need vaseline before every match because he gets ****ed at least a few times would be nice.

We played well yesterday. A kind of "tight aggressive" style.

We played some good stuff against Spurs, and against the Hammers too, it hasn't all been shite but the results need to start coming consistently.

We played really good yesterday and took the game to Spurs.

We are passing and moving a lot more too, and its nice to see.

I really really hope Roy makes me eat my words before the end of the season, and prove he has got what it takes.

The positive I got from the game was in the chances we created, Maxi was unlucky but he at least was TRYING, he got a lot of flak from some after the game, but you have got to be in that position to fuck it up .

I bet Maxi gets between 5-10 more goals before the Seasons out, he is a good player and showing signs again of his good form at the end of last season.

Ming is a GEM. He will get 5-10 more goals before the seasons out too, what a find by HodgePodge, he the Midas touch,

But Poulson seems to be the exact opposite.

Lets hope Roy can pull another Ming in January if we indeed buy anyone.

I'm a better finisher than Maxi.

He's a pussy in front of goal. He's like a shit version of an Arsenal player.

He fucked up, but so did Torres, we could have been 4-6 nil up at half time

yeah, i think i'm with you on this one. it was terribly indecisive, but i'm not quite ready to label him an awful finisher per se.

firstly, as you say he's great at getting himself into good positions, which is obviously a big deal. secondly, didn't he always have a good scoring record at atletico? that doesn't come with being a terrible finisher.
