There was a thread somewhere saying that since Everton had bought 8-9 over the summer, including the absolutely-not-past-it Rooney, that they would be way better than us. You spend more, you buy more - then naturally you are at an advantage.

Lolz at the state of them. Their better players are granddads, their new signings are average* and their ability to gel seems zero.

At least there is some good news :-D

(All my cousins are blood noses that still live in Litherland)

*except Pickford

Yep. Being held up as the epitome of how to do good transfer business last window. That crowd are silent now. Some of us said that they were going to struggle big time to replace Lukaku's goals. They have scored 2 goals in 5 games. Ha.

I wasn't convinced by their signings this summer, bar Pickford. They haven't even nearly replaced Lukaku's goals or reformed their style of play that was geared totally to him.

Having said that, they've lost 4 on the bounce is it? Against Spurs, Chelsea, Man Utd and Atalanta. Two draws before that away against City and Hadjuk Split. Tough run of games that.

I think they'll be alright, but they won't do as well as they have done in recent years.

On hindsight they got screwed on the Lukaku deal. There is no way he is worth 75m and Coutinho almost double. They sold him before the Neymar story broke. If it was a few weeks later than it did, with Chelsea aiding to the bidding war, it would be 120m easy.

Is Pickford that good? He looks like one of those keepers who put in a dive for the cameras. That split second when he compose himself for a full fledge dive (even when it is not needed), could be the difference between him getting the ball or not.

So far I am not convinced.

They've made some good signings, that will eventually gel/come good, but they've got fuck all upfront and it's showing, because they're slow, predictable and easy to play against. It's inviting pressure on the rest of the side.

There is a serious lack of pace in that side and as many people have pointed out that seems to have signed too many no 10s. They have also had a nightmare run of fixtures which has deflated any early season optimism, they will be lucky to sneak into the top 10

Yes. Although Koeman's never struck me as really 'at home' with Everton. He doesn't seem like he fancies being there long enough to really shape and develop the team. He's strengthened the squad but the first team still doesn't look that coherent and characterful to me.

He's had several short, uninspired managerial jobs, often ending in the sack, and where he has done well, he's rarely hung about that long before going elsewhere to "fulfil his ambitions". And he's been fluttering his eyes at Barcelona for the last decade, with his entire post-playing career seemingly entirely focussed on going back there as manager.

So either way, his stay at Everton didn't seem ever destined to be too lengthy, one way or the other.

Mind you, what's the average tenure of a Premier manager anyway? Not very long.

On a complete aside, a City supporter told me that he listened to a series of interviews with people supposedly close to the club about the whole takeover and that at the time it was a choice between City and Everton for Mansour. And that it in no small part down to Everton's dithering that they eventually with City.

A quick Google shows a couple links with some quotes by Purslow and Kenwright.

Has this ever been confirmed by a reputable source?

Imagine the horror?

Problem is (according to my blue mates) he keeps trying to persist with 343 and it doesn't seem to work for them. Every time they try that system more often than not it fails. They play better with a back 4. They're trying to play on the counter but they have fuck all pace up front. So normally they fuck up the first half playing 3 at the back and when it fails they switch to a back 4 for the 2nd half and play better.

It doesn't bear thinking about. Jesus Christ.

As for the choices they made, I think the stadium issue and council support for expansion were factors. Actually, wasn't the stadium already built?

Compare that to Woodison.

All that said, given how much money they have thrown at it, maybe the stadium issue was less of a concern. Perhaps Manchester's size and infrastructure made it a better platform to promote Abu Dhabi as a city?

Either way, much as I hate them, it's a small mercy they didn't pick Everton

Agreed. They have some solid-looking defenders now (though I suspect the loss of Coleman is hurting them) but little or no penetration to throw at the opposition if/when they do get the ball, which is therefore coming straight back at them. I'm guessing they decided before the summer window that they'd never replace Lukaku's goals directly and would therefore spread their spending to bring in a larger number of attacking options. Effectively they've made the same mistake we've made soooooo often in the 90s and since, shopping at Aldi instead of Waitrose hoping for the best, and may have p!$$ed a lot of it right up the wall.

Shame innit.

I'd be surprised if Everton were ever serious contenders for that cash. City had been gifted a brand new stadium whereas Goodison always needed knocking down and starting again.

Also Etihad sponsorship sits better in Manchester given the larger airport and their exec lounge and long haul flights

They have had a shit start no doubt about that but I'm too aware of how the football Gods work.... hubris is not a tactic to confidently throw around and write them off and mock them after only 5 games.... They do seem to lack somewhat up front but they can pick up and it is certainly not impossible for them to finish top 4.

It has been a very strange season so far in some ways.... Arsenal were fucking garbage against us two weeks ago and yet they weren't garbage against Chelsea were they...
