Kirkland addiction

Read an interview with him about it earlier.

Hopefully he's got a handle on it now.

Always seemed like a decent lad, can't remember much about him playing really. We probably didn't do him any favours by both making him the most expensive teenage goalkeeper every and doing it the same day we bought Dudek. Was always gonna be an uphill battle to get in the team.

Addiction is a cunt. Fair play to him for reaching out and being open about it
I did the same and it helped me immensely. Not least because initially I opened up to a bunch of (mostly) faceless souls on a football forum! I must have been mad!!! Believe it or not the amount of support and PMs I got from ‘faceless souls’ from this daft place helped me in ways it’s impossible to calculate. I guess we support the right club tho right? . YNWA

Horrible to read that.

Randomly bumped into him a few years ago in town. Was the day after we had a home game. Spoke to him for a minute or two, really friendly and engaging guy.

He works for LFC Foundation (club’s charity) these days, doing a normally-paid job, working with the local kids - tells you quite a lot about his character. He’s a sound lad from what I can tell, no real ego. Hope he can stay on top of his addiction.

I met him briefly twice last season and he seemed like a genuinely lovely bloke. I was lucky enough to go to the executive lounge a few times and he was the "legend in the room". I'm a short arse but he towered above my mates who are 6ft 2 +. Second time he was brilliant with my 2 autistic kids, really engaging. After he'd walked away from our table, my 7 year old with ADHD whispered (shouted) "Daddy, is that man a giant?"

To me this just highlights the pressure some of these footballers put on themselves.
Yes, most can console themselves with the all the money they're making, but it isn't enough for some.
Kirkland was an up and coming keeper, once slated to be the next England keeper and he did make it to the top. However, the hurt he must of felt to not being able to latch on and stay up there can be unfathomable for us "normals" and I'm sorry to hear that it almost consumed him.
