Kenny's handling of Carroll

Hard to judge isn't it ?

I quite like the fact that he doesn't feel he needs to play Andy simply because of what we paid for him, but I wonder how it's affecting Carroll's motivation and development.

I've thought the opposite Ross. I think for the most part he's stuck with him, ironically I think the fact that Carroll scored on his last game made it easer for Kenny to 'rotate' him as he could claim it wasn't based on form just tactics, which spares knocking a players confidence.

I really want to believe in Carroll, much like Henderson if he works out he could prove to be a great long term signing for the club, again I believe he's desperate to do well for the club. Whether or not I actually believe on him beyond me convincing myself I do, I don't know.

We bench a player due to tactical reasons, as Kenny has said will happen this season.
He' said countless of times that he has a squad not only a first team.

No biggie or drama at all.

I do admire that kenny doesn't play him if he feels it's best for the team ...but surely having a £35m striker on the bench for the biggest game of the season says something ( and yes i know rooney was a sub but that was for different reasons) . If he was doing a job then there's no way he'd be on the bench .

Again i really hope he kicks on cause i do like him but again so far for the money he's not produced enough . We're in a rebuilding stage and i can't help but feel £35m could have been spent so much better , especially considering we don't even look like we know how to fit him in the team.

the worrying thing is that kenny didn't even think he was worth bringing off the bench for 10 minutes at the end, with us piling the pressure on and producing plenty of good deliveries into the box.

Re: Kenny's handling of Carroll

Argument for that is who do you take off? Would we have the ball enough to cross the ball if we took off downing/kuyt /Adam / gerrard?
come off it. if you applied that logic you'd never make any attacking changes!
but its dangerous to use hindsight to say what you would have done, there is no guarantee crosses would have been coming in for carroll

I wanted bellamy for downing before the goals and carroll to come on for kuyt. Would it have changed the way the last 10 panned out? absolutely. But i don't know if crosses would have been flooding in

I think the decision not to play Carroll today is the right decision. I'd expect Bellamy to play but hey i'm not the fucking manager.

I really wanted Carroll to do well and I've tried to look past the price tag his lack of natural ability and his life mistakes like everybody else....but...but...He cost 35 million quid! Not too long ago this is a player who got sent home from Preston after scoring 0 goals in 12 appearances.

I know it was a different time...He cost 10 times what Kenny paid for Alan Shearer? Ten times! Alan shearer might be boring but he also wasn't a violent drunken fool.

He's meant to be a professional athlete and gets paid 80 grand a week to play for the best club in the world. I can't stand the daft twat if he doesn't respect that cos he wants to go out and get pissed up and fight like a 14 year old. He needs to be tee total, and 1st in last out every fucking day til he learns how to play football like a proper centre forward.

"Violent drunken fool " ? what the hell are you waffling on about ? Ok he had some minor issues in the past but he's done nothing wrong on that front since he's been with us .

I think the thread title is wrong, its not kennys handling of Carroll its kennys handling of the team.

If you are the best man for the game of the moment you are in if not then you are not and that is truly the Liverpool way, transfer fee is utterly irrelevant.

Well my problem is that he continues to drink and that's not good enough.

Why violent drunken fool? He's been arrested 3 or 4 times smashed a glass in a lads face, was arrested for hitting a woman, punched and broke Steve taylors jaw. To be honest I have concerns about his character. And smashing a glass in someone's face is a despicable act no matter what the provocation.

We can only judge him on his conduct as a Liverpool player, and thus far he's not been guilty of anything unsavory so you're being extremely unfair on him.

Suarez has bitten another player's ear, Carragher's been cautioned over assault, and Gerrard lamped a Nightclub DJ. Funny you don't mention that.

He had to make way because the captain was back, Suarez is undroppable and we were always going to play with 5 midfielders against United. We always do, and to good effect, too.

He hasn't set the world alight since he arrived, but I don't think he should feel hard done by today.

That's the bottom line here.

If he thinks his price tag earns him a spot in the team he's in trouble... or rather, we are.

It's great that Kenny doesn't feel he HAS to play Andy. It is a bit shit that when we need to push on and try and win a game, we don't/can't turn to our club record signing to help us win an important. I'd play Carroll from the start against Norwich.

i'd play henderson spearheading a midfield 3 too

We have a 35m pound striker on the bench that we didn't think could come on and win us the match.

That says it all. We bought the wrong player.

Whilst I agree with your premise, it's the drinking culture of the young in the UK to go out and get bladdered every week and it's difficult to separate a sheep from the flock. However for a young professional footballer there is nothing wrong with a drink in moderation every now and again to take the pressure off and to socialise, and I think it's unreasonable to expect them to be tee-total for 20 years of their career, however the key is that word 'moderation'. A drink or two once a week is not going to impact his football, health or fitness. Carroll needs guidance in this regard .. let's hope LFC are giving it to him.

Totally agree.

If we needed another striker that badly (and remember Carroll was injured at the time so we certainly didn't buy him for instant impact) then why not get a journeyman until the end of the season and continue with Kuyt and N'Gog ? We could have spent that money a lot more wisely (or even got Carroll on a much reduced fee perhaps) in the Summer.

i didn't really buy into the whole 'panic buy' element of the carroll deal , i thought Kenny or even camolli would be too wise and experienced for that . Ok maybe the price rocketed with the owners willing to pay as a sign of intent after just selling torres but again i figured someone really wanted him . However i'm starting to wonder now as we don't seem to be able to fit him in to the team or style we want to play . I like him , i think he wants to do well here and enjoys being here ...but nothing so far has convinced we didn't spend badly . We're rebuilding and £35m could have been spent so much better , if not on a striker then on other areas of the pitch .

Who has said that? You? I certainly thought he could win us the game.
It had more to do with Kennys tactical disposals than anything else.
I would have brought him on and Kuyt off. But we had them under pressure after they equalised, and created 4-5 big chances. So I can see why Kenny let them finish thegame aswell.

Andy won us the game at Goodison 2 weeks ago. You remember that right?

Well have you not answered yourself ? Kenny and the coaching staff felt he couldn't win us the game . They decided what was on the pitch had a better chance of getting a result and that obviously means they didn't feel Carroll could....... because even if you are playing well, if you have a £35m striker who you have confidence in then you would be dying to put him on .

No, it ment that he would rather continue with a 3 man midfield and 4-5-1. Than change it to2 upfront

i dont think it was a matter of trust... Kenny has shown plenty of times how much he likes Carroll.

Perhaps Kenny forgot he was managing or something? ha
