In our latest column from the club's youth base, Academy director Frank McParland tells us how a lift from Kenny Dalglish resulted in a training session with Steven Gerrard and co for two lucky starlets.

I was at home relaxing on Sunday night when the phone rang.

It was the boss. He told me he'd be down to the Academy on Monday morning at 9.30am sharp and to make sure I had the kettle on!

So, we got everyone together first thing the next day and got them to dress smart for the occasion.

When Kenny arrived we had a quick cup of tea and then he addressed everyone - both Academy staff and players.

He told us that he is focused on spreading the message that this is 'one club' and is very keen for us to get together with the staff from Melwood to actively talk about our young players.

He wants to get down here as much as possible.

He assured the players that there would be big opportunities ahead for them to be involved in first-team training sessions and that some of them will be going away with the first-team for Barclays Premier League games so they can sample the experience of it all.

He mentioned that he was really pleased with the Youth Cup win over Crystal Palace and that the lads had the chance to play at Anfield. We are now using the prozone that the first-team have and will analyse the stats of that performance with it. We have scheduled meetings to discuss this further with Damien Comolli and all of the other fitness people from Melwood.

Everything has been hugely positive and it is great that the Academy is so heavily involved in Kenny's plans.

After that meeting he decided to take Conor Coady and Suso up to Melwood with him to train with the first-team.

He took me and the two boys down to Melwood in his car which was obviously a great moment for them. I watched them train with the likes of Steven Gerrard, Joe Cole and Fabio Aurelio - all the players who weren't involved against Everton.

They both did very well and were a credit to the Academy. I have to say that just watching Gerrard in training was special. Conor and Suso came off the pitch and said that for a 20 minute spell the skipper was unplayable. I was watching and I had to agree with them!

The two lads will now spend the rest of the week there and it is very possible they will go to the game with Wolves and stay at the hotel.

After the session, the boss decided he would drive us back and we watched the U15s train in the afternoon. It was a really good day - but it didn't stop there.

The first-team had the day off on Tuesday and Kenny was at Melwood for various meetings. However, it didn't stop him hot-footing it down to Kirkby to watch an U17s friendly with Shrewsbury.

We had a lot of the scholars who haven't been playing regularly for Rodolfo involved, as well as Jason Banton who we signed recently. He scored and did okay for us which was a positive because we all want to have a good look at what he can offer us.

The fact Kenny took up a place in the dugout alongside Rodolfo was also a nice touch and it will have given all the lads involved a huge lift to have the opportunity to impress the first-team boss.

It's certainly exciting times for us here and great that the boss is bringing us altogether as one.

Kenny used to collect Fowler for training back in the day.

It's great to see such a hands on approach.

I just love him.

I so hope it works out for him and he has a successful few years in charge. Life couldn't get much better than that.

Kenny is the unifying force that we need to go forward. He is certainly making all the right moves and the young lads at the club will be pumped.

He really really does care about the club. Always be a legend to me.

Don't think he regularly fetched Fowler though; he did it once when he noticed Fowler waiting for a bus and offered him a lift..Fowler initially refused because he knew Kenny lived in Southport which was the other way but Kenny insisted.

Fowler joked that his Dad was upset because none of his neighbours saw Kenny dropping Robbie off.

As for the youngsters training with the first team, this was something Kenny was unhappy about in his book too..

WHilst the facilities at the academy were top-notch, the kids no longer trained with the first team or travelled in the team bus as they used to in his day..Kenny was very unhappy about this since he thought this was crucial in developing the youngsters since they needed role models to aspire too.

Rightly so, if I may be so presumptuous.

Avvy - It was Fowler who was peeved because none of his mates were in the street to see him getting dropped off by Kenny. His Dad was with him, of course.

That is the chief reason why I want him to succeed and get the post long-term. Who better than to return us to the top and knock ol' whisky nose off his fucking perch. I love the symmetry and poetic justice that would follow.

Marvellous stuff from Kenny.

x2

I love Kenny, he's fucking immense.

Incidentally, its exactly what Utd do with their kids too, make them feel part of the team, that way if they break through they're less likely to leave for cash alone, also they obviously feel less intimidated in the first team & take to it better.

Such simple steps, with such great consequences done in the exact spirit required by our club.

Did I mention I love Kenny?

We used to do it all the time, i think the new academy in Kirkby put a stop to it

It's all about making everyone feel part of one club. When you get someone as clear-sighted as Kenny about things like that, and you add to it his great love for the club as others have pointed out, it's got to be a good thing.

I loved that story about Kenny in Robbie's autobiography and it always made me think what a cracking guy he is. Whether or not he continues to manage us (and I'd love him to be successful with us again so much) he encapsulates the spirit of this club with this sort of stuff. I love him.

I think you're doing it wrong.

Brilliant news!

When he was opening the new LFC store in Belfast just a couple of months ago, he was only booked for two hours, but because the crowd was so large he made an effort to sign autographs and have photos with as many people as possible and didn't want to disappoint the heaps of supporters who'd been queuing up in the baltic conditions. I didn't expect to get anything signed because I was just reaching the entrance to the store about 15-20 minutes after he was due to leave. Though I should have known better, as I got a mini-ball signed and even 15 minutes later when I left, he was still there with masses of supporters eagerly waiting with hope to meet one of their idols.

How could he be anything but. Regardless if he does well or not on the field.

He has the right approach. We can't ask for much more.

And he was away watching the reserves yesterday, again. He doesn't miss any match does he? 😀

A first half Liverpool goal was enough to settle a disappointing Lancashire Senior Cup quarter-final at Hyde.

With both Roberto Mancini and Kenny Dalglish in attendance, it was City who dominated the early stages with Alex Nimely going close twice in the opening 10 minutes.

Read on RAWK that Coady and Suso will probably travel with the team to Wolves.

CONOR Coady captained England under 19s in their 1-0 defeat to Germany in Chesterfield on Tuesday night.

The Liverpool FC Academy skipper, from Haydock, went close to giving his side a first half lead when his stunning volley struck a post.

England’s side contained seven players who won last year’s UEFA European U17s championship, which Coady also led.

In January the ex-Rainford Ranger junior, who turns 18 later this month, spent a week training with Liverpool’s first team under Kenny Dalglish as part of a ‘familiarisation’ programme for the club’s younger players.

The bright prospect has since returned to the academy set up.
