Juventus eager to secure Benitez for next season
By Harry Harris, Football Correspondent

Juventus are increasingly keen to secure Rafael Benitez for next season after their disappointing campaign suffered further blows in recent days.

Juve have already dismissed Ciro Ferrara after the club's elimination from the Champions League and Coppa Italia, while his short-term replacement, Alberto Zaccheroni, saw the club exit the Europa League last week after defeat to Fulham.

Their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League are also in doubt after a 1-0 defeat to Sampdoria on Sunday left them sixth in the table.

Zaccheroni is in place until the end of the season, but the club's deputy director general, Roberto Bettega, has indicated that they are eager to press ahead with the appointment of a manager for the new campaign.

"The objective now is to make it to the Champions League zone of the table," he said. "We must not ignore the current situation but at the same time it would be wrong not to think of the future. My task is not saying what Juve's problem is but acting on it."

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini, who had success in Serie A with Inter Milan, was linked with the post after his trip to Craven Cottage to watch Fulham's 4-1 win over Juve on Thursday, but both Mancini and Bettega dismissed any speculation that he was a contender. City played Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday.

Fiorentina boss Cesare Prandelli is thought to be on Juve's shortlist, but reports in the Italian press on Monday state that Benitez is still the No. 1 target.

Should Liverpool fail to make it into next season's Champions League, that may hasten Benitez's move to Turin, although he would like to be considered for Real Madrid.

Benitez, who speaks fluent Italian, is highly thought of among the Juve hierarchy and is being courted by Bettega and one of the Spaniard's old friends.

A leading Italian source told Soccernet: "Everyone is guessing, but there is no doubt Juve want Benitez. He speaks Italian, and I am sure he will be interested - if he cannot go to Real."

Italian paper Corriere dello Sport reports that Benitez would be eager to take both Fernando Torres and Javier Mascherano to Juve should he take the job, but there are significant doubts about whether they could afford the estimated £100 million the duo would cost or, indeed, whether they would want to remain united with Benitez. Dirk Kuyt would be a far more realistic target for Benitez and Juve.

I actually think he might resign if the Juve interest is real.

For all his faults, I really do believe that he has tried his best.

If he can see that he's failed this club that he professes to care so much for, he might just walk.

If he's going to leave for Juve, I'd rather he didn't resign in the hope that Juve cough up some compensation (unlikely as that may be). Rafa would do well there I think.

Whether he stays or goes, I'm concerned for next season. We need serious investment come the summer and the cash doesn't appear to be there.

I think Juve would be a good fit for him and I'd wish him well there. I think new scenery will suit him just as I think our club needs fresh ideas.

No smoke without fire. These reports are surely real.

Good luck in your next venture Rafa, but Maureen will need the likes of Torres and Masha to win us the league.

This seems better than when Houllier had to leave. He left without any clubs offering or sighting him up.

If I am Rafa, I will walk now.

As insane as it sounds, and simply for no other reason than an adrenaline rush - I would love him to walk now and let Dalglish take over.

Imagine the look on the players face when the King walks onto the training field with his Adidas trackies on.

Fuck right off now and close the door before you leave.

This would be counter-productive, wouldn't it? 😉

Yep. Win-win. Do it, Rafa.

Yes, I think he could be quite suited to Italian football. More so then the Premiership anyway.

And he's better than the last few fucking clowns that have managed Juve.

Plus he will be reunited with Sissoko and can finally create his dream Central Midfield of Lucarse and Brains.

And how Serie A will quake

Seriously, can you imagine that scenario? Benitez walks, we pay no compo, he takes with him Lucarse, Insua, Maxi, Eggnog et al and Mourinho joins this summer with £100m to spend.

*dream on Brendan. Dream on*

If you were taking a punt on it (not what you'd like), where do you think Rafa will be next season?

Juve
Real
LFC

On the dole.

My only worry is that it won't be Mourinho coming in and the Americans will appoint some clown who will act as a 'Yes' man for them.

Somebody, please put my mind at ease.

I'd be amazed if working under the Americans would appeal to Jose. He'd only come in if there a possible takeover had been agreed and was promised the decent chunk of cash we need.

However I have more faith in the Americans making the decision than others. It's easy to put too much emphasis on the Klinsman debacle, however he was only sounded out when Rafa was looking to leave instantly and they had to consider their options abruptly. Plus he was their mate. It was ill-conceived but understandable.

This time have plenty of time to consider their options and hopefully come to a decent decision. I suspect they'll use the opinions of Dalglish and Purslow, too, who should safe-guard us from the shitcunt managers out there.

I want Montse and the girls to stay though. They must be fed up with him too by now.

I think the Klinsman thing is very muddy water too. I think Klinsman made more out of it than just a tentative inquiry/advice to get himself the Bayern job.

Ha, ha, @Doctor Mac's post............

even in your dreams, £100m for that deadwood looks wildly ambitious.

I suspect the £100 mill.would be extra to any money that lot might bring in (which might just about reach £10 mill.IMO).

oh right-ho. maybe from gerrard & torres then?

I doubt it was meant to be that focused. I think it was another part of the overall dream in which Brendan was indulging.
