Liverpool's Jordan Henderson

Tuesday March 27,2012
By Daily Express reporter
JORDAN HENDERSON has delivered a blunt appraisal of his fortunes during his first season at Liverpool, but will not run from the challenge of winning round the sceptics.

Midfielder Henderson said he has been “too safe” in his performances and admitted his form has been “up and down” since his arrival from Sunderland last summer in a £16million deal.
“I’ve done the basics, but when I watch matches back I’ve not shown that cutting edge which I believe that I have got,” said Henderson.

at least he realises the problem, also I don't think the crowd helps. anfield that has been to anfield this season you can feel the tension in the crowd and any misplaced pass is meet with very audible groans so as a player you must be reluctant to try anything for fear of fucking up.

Wow, well at least he acknowledges that he's performing anywhere near where he can.

Having said that, he's being played out wide, which clearly doesn't benefit him or the team. You'd think given Adams inadequacies, Gerrard's fitness and the absence of Lucas that he'd get given a fair crack at playing in the middle.

Is he taking one for the team (the Management) there?

I think next season the likes of henderson and downing are going to show their true ability because it's clear they are playing within themselves. they were much better for their former clubs and you can add carroll to that list as well.

Sometimes Neil, player's 'play well' for midtable teams but never make the step up, it's not because they are holding back their inhibitions it's just because they aren't good enough & playing above 'their level'. Im not sure that's the case with Hendo and maybe Carroll but I highly doubt Downing will just click and become a top player.

there are a number of (possible) reasons

1) opposition play more open football v midtable teams as they feel they can get points. more space gives you more time on the ball.
2) for top teams the expectations is crushing, you are expected to win every game where as a midtable team is happy with an away point. less expectation, less pressure, less likely to snatch at chances, more willing to attempt something out of the ordinary.
3) in the case of carroll and henderson it's their local club and all they have ever known so maybe more passion and moving clubs at such a young age can't be easy.

1)Absolute bollocks Neil - You seem to think that teams lower down in the league only show up against the big teams or something - In fairness Im sure you're argument would have had some weight about ten-years back in the Premier league but it's most definitely not the case anymore - the league is far too competitive for that to be the case.

2)Again are you suggesting that 'non-top teams' don't set their sights on anything but victory? Obviously they have realistic expectations going into matches but were hardly Utd and I doubt any team this season has come to Anfield bricking it.
The players weren't forced to join the football club, they move up to progress and win Silverware I'd like to think they were aware of the pressure that come with playing for a Club this.

3)Again, I can name a few thousand players who left local clubs at young ages and went to establish careers at top teams elsewhere.

This isn't Roy of the Rovers, it's real life and sometimes people just aren't good enough regardless.

2) teams come to anfield and park the bus, they choke the life out of the game and wait for their moment to counter attack, there are exceptions but this is what mostly happens. there is no why on earth anyone is going to convince me that teams park the bus at villa or s'land or whatever.

Teams do it to United aswell Neil, and Arsenal, and Chelsea and anyone else superior to themselves, it's the nature of the game that the lesser team will more often than not look to frustrate the opposition and nick a goal or two. We're not the only side that has to deal with it, we're just one of the top sides that consistently fails to deal with it.

Yes, teams come to us and do that but don't do it to any one of the 6 teams above us ?!

Christ, the whole reason they do it is because they know we can't do anything about due to players like Downing,Carroll and Henderson.

I know teams do it to the top teams, may point is midtable teams don't park the bus v midtable teams so have more space to work with hence the reason players in midtable teams shine.

also players like adam had the team built around them so was the focal point for attacks and that isn't the case here.
to be honest there are absolutely loads of reason why this years signings haven't performed that aren't simply 'because they're shit'.

There may be a few mitigating factors, neil, but it's primarily because they aren't good enough for a club with top 4 ambitions. Downing and Adam certainly. The jury's still out on Carroll and Henderson, but we'll see how it goes.

I think it was a mix up at the careers office. Somewhere in Sunderland there's a Henderson cutting Lego haircuts who should be playing for us.

At least he sees there is a problem, hope he grows some cajones and has a real go now till the end of the season. Deep deep down under the timid shell there is a player in there - he just has to let him out.

Agree. A lot of it is confidence

I think in the old days Henderson would have been gradually bedded into the team over the course of a season or two.
In the beginning there would be little expected of him other than to learn the manner and style that we play and become prepared for a more significant role in the team in seasons to come.

However Jordan has been thrust straight in to a team that is not established as a winning one, playing with a lot of mediocre players or players in a similar position as himself and is expected, by the fans at least, to make a significant contribution into improving the team dramatically and immediately.

It is a lot to ask of such a young lad though I suppose the transfer fee he generated is behind a lot of these expectations. If he had came into a team with an attacking six containing Alonso, Maschreano, Gerrard and Torres I suspect that most fans would have a vastly inflated opinion of him and his abilities than they currently have.

Is it not easier to look good in a crap team? Just as he did last season.
I was thinking that there would be less responsibility and expectations on his shoulders if he had come into a strong established side

Yeah, maybe. But I do agree, when you come to a big club when they're not not performing well, you're on a hiding to nothing.

I still think there's a player in there, half the battle is self confidence, and it doesn't help playing him in a role where he clearly doesn't excel unless he has a bit of space to put a ball in. He might come good, he might not, the price tag is a heavy burden but I wouldn't write him off yet.

He'll come good. The sad thing is that we as a club are seriously underachieving this season which makes it Even harder to adjust.

He has also played at least 10 games to many this season, but that is down to Kenny.

some of henderson's play is excellent, like his first time passes but he really needs to man the fuck up and take more responsibility rather than passing the buck like a pussy (not that I've ever seen a pussy pass the buck).
