Sad news broke on Tuesday night out of Argentina that Newcastle favourite Jonas Gutierrez has been diagnosed with testicular cancer.
Gutierrez made his health disclosure to a number of Argentinian media outlets, and Jonas’ version of events are hugely damaging for Newcastle United.
It has now been revealed that Jonas was diagnosed in May/June last year, after the Magpie suffered ongoing pain following a clash with Bacary Sagna in a match against Arsenal. That prompted a series of tests which revealed to serious nature of Gutierrez’s health.
Jonas told local media:
I returned [to Necastle] at end of November [2013]… in mid-December, manager [Alan Pardew] told me it would be best for me to find another club.
The hardest part is over, I’ve got a couple of sessions of chemo left. The end [of treatment] is a little closer each day.
I told some people that I’d had my head shaved as a promise for something, so as not to have to tell everyone all the details.
[Gabriel] Heinze was a great help, he called me and told me to keep fighting… a guy like him, a hard guy, was good support.
I wanted to tell this story to help people, if I can. I got an email from someone in a similar situation the other day.
