Liverpool looking to make a move for Newcastle United’s utility winger

Liverpool could potentially be looking to make a move for Newcastle United winger Jonas Gutierrez in January, subsequent to the departure of manager Chris Hughton. Gutierrez has been known to be a firm supporter of Hughton’s philosophy and went on to express his displeasure at his dismissal to the public, via numerous mass media mediums.

Even though the Argentina international was sidelined earlier in the season to accommodate Hatem Ben Arfa; however, even, before the Frenchman was sidelined with a broken leg, Gutierrez remained certain of his former manager’s viewpoint and stood firmly by it.

At present, the situation has altered. Liverpool are considering a test of the player’s loyalty to the club rather than to the manager, by making a bid for the 27-year-old when the transfer window reopens as they seek to add another wide man to their squad in order to offer more service for Fernando Torres up front.

Gutierrez was often talked about as an option by Rafael Benitez during his time in charge at Anfield. However, now, his successor, Roy Hodgson, could be set to make a firm offer over this bid. Gutierrez has three years left to run on his contract at St. James Park and will cost in the region of eight million pounds, if the team are to make a move for him.

Looking at the scenarios, this can certainly be a very wise and strategic move. Liverpool could do with some natural width, bearing in mind the recent dismissal of Chris Hughton and the projected appointment of Alan Pardew may well create confusion at Newcastle that could lead to some of the Magpies top talents being acquired by other clubs.

The Argentine international was performing brilliantly ever since he joined Newcastle and he led the St. James’ Park side back into the top flight at the end of the last season. The twenty-seven-year old has performed remarkably well this term in Premier League and can only improve from here on.

Newcastle United fans will be despised to lose such a class player, but recent events should have created the ambiance that could well result in just such a deal being done, particularly (if reports are accurate) when you take into account that owner Mike Ashley is looking to stabilize the books with the sale of a player or two.

Not pleased with this link at all. I'm not even sure he is better than what he have got at the moment, which is nothing.

Thanks but no thanks.

Sounds like bollocks to me. What's the source?

Yeah, from dodgy sites like Sportingo and Caughtoffside. Jornos riding on the 'Newcastle wave'. 😛

i actually really like him....

very hard worker with a bit of much needed bite..

It would be a decent signing as he is capable of covering multiple positions.

Re: Jonas Gutierrez for £8m

Gareth Thomas, you are slipping up.

First Ronaldinho and now this.

I knew a guy who predicted that Germany would be close enough to winning the world cup, when everyone and their mum was busy laughing at the stupidly inexperienced squad Germany had.

sort it out...

This is exactly the kind of transfers that we shouldn't be making anymore - a relatively small improvement for way too much money.

i like him. Struggled in his first season in the prem, but after getting used to the rough championship he seems to come back stronger and he can actually beat a man. We've been linked to much worse, and there are worse players we can spunk 6m on

I agree. He's better than Riera who didn't too badly for us and a natural left footer. He'd improve the balance for sure. For 8m, i think it would be an 'astute' signing.

I'm sick to death of functional players who main selling point is that they're "solid" and some kind of marginal improvement.

Point taken, but I think he'd do better in a better team and not *every* player can be a marquee signing. Who would you like to see play wide left for us?

I wouldn't mind someone like Gutierrez if he was simply brought in to bolster the squad or to replace existing squad players and we were intent on buying someone else to be first choice. But that wouldn't really be the case I don't think.

I want pace, goals and a killer instinct out wide.

I think he would add to our depth and he's premiership proven. I'd also like someone with the characteristics that you mention. Hazard would be good but he'd probably take time to adjust to the premiership.

£8m to improve our team not one little bit ? Nah
At least we'd have one actual factual winger though

He's a bit of craic with his swashbuckling style of play but I don't think he would improve us enough to warrant an 8 million move for him. He can ghost past a player at times but his end product is a bit suspect hence his lack of goals and assists.

Pass.

Agree. Jonas is better than his reputation and as a left back he'd be an improvement on what we've got in my opinion.

However it baffles me that you've elsewhere stated that you don't want us to sign Young (if I'm not mistaken) when he's actually ticking all those boxes you're lining up in your last sentence?
I haven't said anything about Young.
My bad then.

I referred to this comment of yours in the rumour-thread when Young was beeing discussed:

- I think the more English players we add to the team, the worse we get.

Fuck off.

Haha, don't mince your word there Ryan.
