Met him on the train once in 2004 the day of the game against Monaco. Shook my hand enthusiastically and started talking about our current form, which was handy as all I was doing was mumbling and staring at my feet. One of my heroes growing up.

Made the absolute most of his limited talent. Ousted from the team by Houghton, never whinged. Went home to care for his ill sister and gave up the game that paid him handsomely. was on first plane over after Hillsborough to do whatever he could. Absolutely top bloke. Love him.
