Barton: Drop teacher's pet Barry – I'm England's best midfielder

By Matthew Spiro
Thursday, 7 April 2011

Joey Barton has issued a damning verdict on the state of the England team, claiming they have no chance of winning any of the next 50 World Cups and pointing to Gareth Barry's presence in the side as evidence of a lack of midfield talent.

Barton labelled Barry "a teacher's pet" and likened the player, who captained England in their last game against Ghana, to a tortoise. The Newcastle United man also described himself as the country's leading midfielder and insisted the time had come for him to be forgiven for past misdemeanours and recalled to the national squad.

Barton has won just one England cap, against Spain in 2007. His often controversial career was put on hold as he served a prison sentence the following year, yet the 28-year-old appears to have rediscovered his best form and is convinced he has a role to play in Fabio Capello's team.

"Honestly, I think I'm the best [English midfielder]," Barton told the French magazine So Foot. "Luka Modric and Samir Nasri are very good, but in terms of English players... well, Jack Wilshere isn't bad, but Frank Lampard's on the way down and Steven Gerrard's been injured a lot."

Barton saved his most withering remarks for Barry. "Did you see the game against Germany at the World Cup?" he asked. "If you watch the fourth goal, when [Mesut] Ozil was up against Barry, it was like the hare and the tortoise.

"Barry's got a very good agent," Barton offered as an explanation for the player's success. "He's also discreet and always agrees with the manager. He's like the guy who sits in the front row and listens to the teacher. I certainly don't lose any sleep when I play against him."

Barton, who revealed he spends his spare time watching football on television at home now that he has given up drinking, was particularly struck by the technical and tactical deficiencies in England's 2-1 friendly defeat by France in November.

"Look at Jordan Henderson [again

I actually think he's severely underrated both talent and consistency wise. Yes a knob, but he's been excellent for Newcastle this season.

Sounds like he has an axe to grind - he probably borrowed it from his brother.

oh my

Gerrard is still twice the player he is.
But I think much of what Barton said is spot on.

Even though I think he's a cunt.

Too much?

Public demonstrations of cuntiness seem to guarantee you a place in the England set up these days, so Barton has reason to feel aggrieved.

He's a very good player. But he's an absolute knob who punches like a little girl.

He had a burger in his hand tho so excuse his jarg jabs. I'd buzz of him in our squad. He's been a bit of a tit like and he is a bit of a tit with a boss ego but i'd have him over Adam. An we'd be able to say "eyar he's a mad cunt tho so gis him cheaper?" to the toon.

If he was as good as he thinks he is, he'd be in the England team.

Not that either one of us is arsed, but do you not think that his shopping list of misdemeanours has led to him being black-balled by the FA ?

The England team is in dire need of a shake up so I can understand the frustration of lesser capped players, but when it comes to Barton I just don't give a damn.

Maybe, but that's an easy line semi-good footballers use to excuse their omissions regularly; cf Bowyer, Pennant, Barton.

If public misdemeanours and scandals were enough to keep you out of an England set-up then the likes of Tony Adams would never have got a cap.

If you're good enough, the FA will excuse anything.

He's one of the only true personalities left in the premiership, no shackles. It's a pity he's a dick but I still like him cause he just doesn't give a fuck.

Joey Barton has reopened his feud with former Manchester City team-mate Ousmane Dabo.

Newcastle midfielder Barton was involved in an infamous training ground bust-up with Dabo four years ago while at City, which resulted in the Frenchman ending up in hospital

Barton received a four-month suspended prison sentence for assault along with 200 hours community service as well as a six-game ban from the Football Association.

The 28-year-old remains bitter about Dabo's decision to press charges following the incident and he has now given his version of events for the first time.

"I have never given my side of the story, but the truth is that he started the fight and I finished it," Barton told French Magazine So Foot.

"Frankly, Ousmane is a little pussy. It's him who hit me from behind with his hand.

"When he did that, I hit him back. It happened just like that, bang, bang bang and it was over. But I am no monster. I don't like fighting, but it's human to defend yourself.

"The problem was I hit him three times. Of course, it was not the best response, but I grew up in the street and when I am attacked, I defend myself and when you fight, there are no rules."

Barton insists Dabo should not have reported him to police and should have tried to sort the problem among themselves.

"I wanted to discuss it like men, but he never came to see me and that makes me angry because he told lies in the papers and I was not able to respond.

"There was a late tackle in training and we exchanged a few words. I have an aggressive style and he wasn't happy.

"I told him, 'You are a piece of s**t, don't come looking for me'. He said, 'You are arrogant, you think you're something special'.

"We kept talking and I said, 'Yeah, you're great', but it was sarcastic because he was not playing well, so he slapped me from behind. He tried to be the bad boy, but it was him who ended up on the floor."

Barton admits he is not proud of the fight, but he claims he had no choice but to defend himself once Dabo raised his hand to him.

"You know, I am not proud of that. It's never good to fight a team-mate, but from the moment he raised his hand to me ... it's hard to explain," continued Barton.

"If we saw each other tomorrow, we might say, 'What we did was stupid, I am sorry and we should never have fought'.

"I've seen team-mates fighting at least 15 times but City said I had hit him too many times."

Dabo totally denies Barton's version of events saying it was the Scouser who attacked him from behind.

"I had my back turned when he charged at me and thre a right into my temple, like a coward.

"I was knocked out but, while I was out of it, he grabbed my head and struck me with 10 right-handers from close range.

"In a man's fight it's impossible that this guy - who is half my size - sparks me out with one punch.

"It was anything but fair."

If he was unconscious how does he know he was hit another 10 times?

Oh, and barton comes across as a twat in his explanation.

Witnesses?

Who was it he punched in the stomach, this season ?

I don't recall that being self-defense.

Cheers.

He tried to make out it was a slap.
Nuts.

EDIT:

When I say "slap" I mean open-palmed tap to the abdomen. Something friendly, rather than the dig, it really was.

Also, he put Xabi out for a few games that season we were going for the title.

Remember the mindless foul he committed, in front of the Kop, that got him sent off ?

He pleaded innocence then, the twat.

Yup.

"I am not proud of that"

Yeah, really sounds like it Joey.
