Joe Cole: Andy Carroll is the new Drogba, except Liverpool striker can be even better
By Sportsmail Reporter

Joe Cole has jumped on the Andy Carroll bandwagon and hailed his Liverpool team-mate as the new Didier Drogba - but reckons the England striker can be even better.

Praise was heaped upon Carroll, 22, after he celebrated his first international goal in only his second start during Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Ghana at Wembley. And Cole has likened the ex-Newcastle star's influence to that of former Chelsea colleague Drogba, insisting the £35million January recruit has a very bright career ahead of him at Anfield.

'He’s very much like Didier Drogba,' Cole told LFC Weekly.
'Andy’s 22 - we all know what a cracking player Didier is, but he wasn’t playing at this level at that age.

'There’s still a lot of developing for Andy to do so he can get better and better.'
Cole also saluted fellow Liverpool new boy Luis Suarez backing the Uruguay frontman to forge a fruitful attacking partnership with Carroll on Merseyside.

He added: 'Andy's a good lad and I think you’d have been hard pressed to have found two better signings in January than Andy and Luis Suarez.'

Cole has endured a frustrating season so far since he signed for the Reds on a free transfer from Chelsea last summer but the 29-year-old one-time England star insists he is feels honoured to be at the club and has vowed to return to his best.

'I’m privileged to play for Liverpool Football Club and privileged to be a professional footballer,' said Cole, who has been hampered by injuries this term.

Joe Cole insists he still feels privileged to be at Liverpool Football Club despite a debut season of mixed fortunes.

'The best thing you can do as a player is make sure that you don’t take that for granted every day because it’s a great lifestyle. There is nothing you would want to change.

'It’s been a bit stop-start for me this season but football’s all about ups and downs and sometimes you just have to ride the rollercoaster. I just try to have a positive outlook and keep going.

'I’m enjoying my football at the moment and taking every day as it comes, making sure I work hard every day from the moment I come in to the moment I leave.'
While boss Kenny Dalglish has taken most of the plaudits for Liverpool's revival following the departure of Roy Hodgson in January, Cole believes the appointment of former Blues No 2 Steve Clarke has been equally key.

He added: 'I don’t think you’ll find a better coach around than Steve Clarke.
'The lads really enjoy training and I am coming into work with a big smile on my face every day. I think all the lads are happy and results have picked up.'

I cant wait to see cole get back to his old form! He is getting there and hopefully next season he will be on top of his gamr because he is a world class player! As for Carrol... Im still not convinced that he is going to be as all the hype around him... I hope he will be and yes he is a good player but I noticed last night that he is actually very slow at international level and I dont think he is going to have a sudden increase in speed in the next few years so cant see him being as good as drogba who is power full and fast!

I don't think Joe Cole will be here next season

Unless he scores 8 goals in the last 8 games.

Carroll is nowhere near as good as Drogba. Sure they've got the same size but Drogba is(was) quicker, stronger, a better dribbler and a better finisher.
He could also create goals himself.

Carroll is more of a old fashion target man.

Carroll is bigger than Drogba.

Much bigger.
[/quote]

Drogba: 1.89 m (6 ft 2 1/2 in)

Carroll: 1.91 m (6 ft 3 in)

Yeah much bigger.

It's hard to tell yet how near a Drogba he'll be but he sure is bigger. Some of the finishing by him this season has been excellent too and he is so dominant in the air it's unreal at times.

How about width?

You know what Drogba was doing between age 20 and 24?

Scoring 12 goals in 64 appearances for some French second division side.

Then he made the massive leap to Guingamp, whoever they are (currently in the French 3rd Division) and got 20 in 45.

What I'm saying is, anyone saying Carroll will achieve Drogba's level at his age is looking for some major outlying weird thing to happen, and anyone saying Drogba was better at Carroll's age is just plain mental.

They're not in any way comparable.

People forget he's only been back 2-3 weeks after a 3 month layoff. It'll take him time to get back to his sharpest.

No doubt, Shiny. I think he's gonna be great.

Dribbling and pace is not something you develop when you're 22 years old.
Carroll might improve his link-up play, vision, awareness and composure but I doubt he'll end up being anywhere near as good as Drogba in other aspects of the game.

Drogba : 91.0kg

Carroll : 79kg

I shit you not.

Well he has decent pace, just wait and see when he's fully fit. He's never going to be a great dribbler but who cares as it's not a crucial part of his game?

Remember he's only 22 so comparison with Drogba at his peak is unfair.

I'm quite sure he's nearer to 97 than 79kg.

i don't think he'll end up being as good as drogba, but i think he'll end up very close, but with better facets in other areas of his game

actually, fuck it, i think carroll will be as good as drogba. Big andy is a monster

The voice of reason.

I think many of you are letting your hate for Chelsea and for "Dogbreath" blind your judgement on him. We laughed at Chelsea when they bought him for 20 odd million while we paid £12-£15 for Cissé. Who's laughing now?

oh there's no question drogba is one of the best players in the league. Debatably one of the best in the premier league era. Its just big andy has shown so much at such a young age. it's not like he's done an owen and relies on pace and skill. This lad is all about power. you don't lose power.

How does hate for Chelsea come into it? Everyone knows Drogba was a monster at his peak and one of the best(if not the best) forwards in the world.

Carroll is only 76kg according to lfc.tv. I'm supposedly about 10kg heavier than him, and I'm only 5"10.

So much for being much bigger than Drogba.

theres not many 22 year olds who are as built as a sportsman who's been in the game for years, at clubs which place a high amount of onus on physicality. Hopefully we'll get him on the weights

That's what impresses me with Andy. To think that he's gonna play in the U21s this summer. He's gonna scare the living crap out of the other young defenders there. Spain are gonna get buttf*cked.

Like I said, with more experience, other aspects of his game will improve and hopefully he'll become lethal in the box. We can't just rely on him being a power house in the air.

If we can get a decent midfielder in the summer that can provide those passes (cough Aquaman) well be in "19th" heaven at the end of next season.

With his kit on, boots, shin pads and all he's around 77.5 kg. Savvy?

Agreed, I just feel as if some here are downplaying his ability while lifting Carroll to a level he isn't in right now. Drogba isn't the right player to compare him with. Despite Drogba saying this:

“I’ve been very impressed with him,†“People say I’m good in the air but he’s not bad either!â€â€œWhat he does, and what I like to do, is attack the ball.â€

“You have to do this to give it the direction you want, whether you are flicking it on to one of your team-mates or going for goal yurself.â€
