Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing believes that a desire to impress new boss Roy Hodgson was behind the committed performance from a young Reds side in the pre-season friendly against Grasshoppers this week.
A team with an average age of just 20 battled to a goalless draw against the Swiss outfit, and Spearing feels that the chance to catch the watching manager's eye was too good to miss for the young players who participated.
"When a new manager comes in, every single one of us have got to try and impress and listen to what he's got to say," Spearing told his club's official website.
"That's what we tried to do and hopefully it worked.
"There have been a lot of hard sessions every day and I think it showed in the game with the effort the whole team put in.
"Right from the goalkeepers to the forwards, everybody worked very hard and it showed in the things we did.
"The lads put in a great effort and I am looking forward to Saturday now."
At just 21 years of age, Spearing was one of the senior players in the game, and he skippered the side for the last 30 minutes, taking over the armband from Lucas Leiva.
"Obviously the likes of Lucas and [Alberto] Aquilani are here with us, but there are a few lads here from the academy, so I've got to try and look after them out on the pitch," he said.
"We had Jack Robinson, Tom Ince and Nathan Eccleston, who have all come from the academy, play against Grasshoppers, while there was Jonjo Shelvey who has just come in. They know what they're doing, but you've got to help them along.
"As a Liverpool lad, it was a dream for me to captain the side and I have to say thanks to Lucas for passing the armband on. Hopefully it won't be the last time."
