Rafa calm over Mascherano
Liverpool boss wants to see midfielder return to form
Last updated: 19th September 2009

Mascherano: Not leaving

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has again insisted that Javier Mascherano is not for sale, but he wants him to quickly recover his best form.

Mascherano was strongly linked with a move to Barcelona in the summer, but Xabi Alonso's switch to Real Madrid ended any hopes that he may also get a move to Spain.

Now a combination of form and injury has seen Mascherano kicking his heels on the bench in recent games - but Benitez fully expects him to be back to his best sooner rather than later.

"He is the captain of Argentina thanks to Liverpool," said Benitez.

"He understands it's very, very important for us to have the best from Mascherano if we want to win more games."

Benitez admits that The Reds are very much looking to extend his stay with the club.

"I have told the managing director that he is very important to us and we want to keep him, and we will look at his contract when the time is right," Benitez explained.

"He is a key player for us and he will be a key player for us during the season.

"I think he is working very hard and in one or two games he was playing well but the team was not doing really well in the other two. It's more the team than just one player.

"He has to play at the level he was before, but he has enough time to do that, and we know he is a key player for us, and will be for a long time."

Not for sale
The Liverpool boss also confirmed that he has warned Barcelona off making a move, confirming that he told their sporting director Txiki Begiristain that Mascherano would not be leaving.

"There is talk of Barcelona interest still, but top sides are always interested in top players, this is normal," he said.

"He has a contract and we want to keep him. I told Begiristain before that we wanted to keep him and he knows my opinion.

"The main thing for me is that he is a professional. He has been in London and he has been in Liverpool and I think he was very happy in Liverpool, so if we can win some games then I think it will be easier for a professional to be happy."

So far he's looked like a player that knows he'll be leaving at the end of this season.

I get the same impression based on what happened over the summer and they way this season has started. It wouldnt be difficult to imagine that he has some verbal agreement in place to go over next summer.

I'm worried that Rafa thought the above point needs to be emphasized in public.

To an extent it feels like he is afraid of Masher leaving next summer. If he wants to leave, he leaves. We can surely find a replacement.

I think you're probably right, otherwise we'd have wrapped up a contract already

Yeah, me too as I can't remember reading that he got his pay rise that he so obviously wanted this summer.

Also, he wants to go and he's the player we can make the most money from in sales (apart from Stevie and Nando but there's no way on Earth we'll be selling those two).

Yeah we should snap up Reo-Coker on the cheap from Villa in January and we'd be all set to sell him then.

Benitez is not really good at throwing a punch though...

He could probably take one though
[/quote]

His gut could well take a few...

I hope he stay with us for many years.
He is excellent at what he does and is real warrior.
Hopefully Rafa and the board can get his contract situation sorted out.
One positive will be his transfer value, we should make a profit on him if he were to leave.

No, I know.

It's just last summer I've heard people say we should expect around £35M, which I think is very far-fetched

Despite what he brings us I wouldn't be sad to see Javier go.

I will.

Our midfield has been the foundation upon which this team has been built on over the last couple of years and I don't want to see it weakened any further. Already this season we've seen us looked stretched in the middle of the park and the defence come under increased pressure.

I keep hearing that Masher and Alonso aren't worth the sums being touted, but there is a reason why clubs like Real and Barca are willing to pay those amounts - they're the best out there.

Absolutely right. Some of us warned that we wouldn't really know how important Alonso was to us until he actually went. I reckon that'll prove at least as true of El Jefecito.

Don't get me wrong, I rate him as a footballer and think he's worth what we paid and possibly a bit more.

But if he was to force through a move then fuck it - I wouldn't feel slightly empty upon his departure like I did with Alonso.

I don't like his attitude at all.

If we could get Ya Ya Toure in exchange I wouldn't be too upset.

Yea, cause that'll happen !

*cries into mug of gin*

Good. Hopefully we'll get a fortune for him and spend it on a better player.

He's wildly overrated Neil.

Is it just me or does it seem like Mascherano is protecting Inusa on the pitch and also giving him instructions and passing the ball to him more than usual?
Looks like a big brother little brother combo.

I thought Masher was fantastic yesterday. Didn't notice Xabi was gone with some of Masher's passing. I hope that form continues.

i don't think we'll get a fortune. he'll have 18 months left on his contract next summer.

if mash was fully commited to the club then he'd be a bigger asset, as heart and leadership are 2 of his main attributes.
