You cannot be serious? If a couple of starts and a goal or two is all you need for this, I'm surprised Sterling didn't make it last year. Clearly the move to Manchester is affecting the BBC.

Adnan Januzaj has impressed for Manchester United this season
Ten contenders have been shortlisted for the BBC young sports personality of the year 2013 - including Manchester United's teenager midfielder Adnan Januzaj.
The 18-year-old will be hoping to emulate team-mate Wayne Rooney, who won the award in 2002, but his presence is something of a surprise given that he has only played a handful of games for the United first team.
Januzaj was born in Belgium but has yet to choose which country to represent internationally - he is currently ineligible for England. Although not British, he is eligible for the BBC award as he is resident in and plays in the UK and his main achievements were in this country and not for a national team.
Januzaj is up against athletes Dina Asher-Smith and Jess Judd, golfer Charley Hull, shooting's Amber Hill, swimmer James Guy, paralympic swimmer Amy Marren, weightlifter Rebekah Tiler, wheelchair racer Isaac Towers and canoe slalom's Kimberley Woods.

What have any of the others on the list done ?

It seems like a stupid idea for an award.

Bbc do live next door to OT now. Suspicious.

Special award for sir Ryan as well ?

I love how they say 'and canoe slalom's...' as if canoe slaloming is a hugely popular sport that boasts a great mass of stars. They might as well have put 'and some woman in a canoe'. Who the hell's going to vote for a canoe slalomist? Her parents, a couple of her school friends and that bloke who faked his death in a freak canoe-related sea tragedy.

What's happened to Marcheda btw?

*Truth to be told, this lad looks a very very good footballer, but to try and smother him with prizes at this stage is stunningly premature.

We are actively seeking this man, the head of the fan club for Canoe Slalom's Kimberly Woods. He was last seen on Hartlepool seafront attempting to pin 'Don't vote for Januzaj' posters on the side of the salmon trawlers.

Noticed that Yaya Toure won BBC African Footballer of the year.

What the fuck is all that about? why do the BBC do an African Footballer of the year?, why do the feel the need to do one? do they also do footballers of the year from the other continents?

I'm not sure what indignation is about. That Januzaj looks mint...... Annoyingly.

Yes Michael Owen and Kevin Keegan(in Hamburg) won the Euro equivalent.

Just done a quick google and theres nothing for BBC South American footballer of the year, Asian footballer of the year etc... just African.

Did find this about our good old doctor Iqbal though...

Liverpool doctor nominated for Asian Football Award
Steven Gerrard has described Liverpool's first-team doctor, Zaf Iqbal, as the "king of medicine".
The Liverpool captain was speaking about Iqbal following his nomination at this year's Asian Football Awards.
The awards, which take place at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday, recognise the outstanding contribution of individuals with a South Asian heritage.
Gerrard said: "I've had serious injuries of late, and without the doc I'd have been in big trouble."
Speaking to BBC Asian Network, Gerrard added: "In his spare time, I think Zaf is always pushing for kids to stay healthy and get involved in sport. Credit to him."
Now in their second year, the awards honour those in the professional game and in grassroots football initiatives.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said: "I think the awards are really important. It's great that you can reward people for being inspirational in the community.
Zaf Iqbal's career in football

  • Qualified as a doctor in London in 1999
  • Started working with Leyton Orient before a spell with the England youth set-up
  • Became chairman of the FA Medical Society in 2006
  • Joined Tottenham Hotspur, working with the club's youth teams before being promoted to first-team doctor in 2008
  • Appointed Liverpool first-team doctor in 2010
"I think people like Zaf are a shining light for people who want to go on and have a great career."
Iqbal is up against Shabaaz Mughal (Tottenham Hotspur), Sangi Patel (QPR) and Imran Alam (QPR) for the Behind the Scenes - Medical Award.
Asian Football Awards founder Baljit Rihal said: "Our primary objective is to create an awareness of the positive efforts made by Asians within the football industry.
"We also aim to engage with organisations and individuals to help increase participation levels of the Asian community within the UK.
"I believe the awards will help highlight the growing importance the Asian community plays in the professional game, as well as at grassroots level, and that it will serve as an inspiration for others to get involved."
Awards categories include Player, Young Player, Inspiration, Asian Team, Women in Football, Coach, Development Project and Unsung Hero.
Speaking about football at grassroots level, Harban Singh, the head coach of Mahal FC, a Midlands-based semi-pro British Asian team, said: "We have now got networks, with the scouts at higher football clubs.
"We get talented players and they are getting picked up. For example, we have built a good connection with West Bromwich Albion."
Singh also reflects on the changing attitudes of British Asians, saying: "The attitudes of Asian parents are different from twenty years ago. We are British parents and we now encourage sports - as well as education, in schools."
You can hear the full interviews and highlights from the Awards on the BBC Asian Network's Noreen Khan show 13.30-17:00 BST, all next week.

The bias shown by the media towards Utd borders on fanaticism, he looks like a fantastic young player though.

Aren't you being a little paranoid with this BBC in Manchester obsession?

It's the Young Sports Personality Award. It's a pat on the head and a bouquet of flowers.

Come on. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the only reason Janu-what's his name-zaj is shortlisted is so they can get him to play for Ingerlund.

I mean, how dare he choose to play for the mighty Albania when he's just won the highly esteemed BRITISH-bc sports personality award !!
