So glad he scored the winner.

He would've easily been MOM even if Spain had lost. Xavi often seems to get a lot of the plaudits, but for the last 60-70mins or so, Iniesta ran the show and everything they did in the final third seemed to go through him.

It was the same in the CL final against Utd. Barca looked pretty ropey and he was one of the very few whose quality and mentality shone through to really help them through.

Class player and one of the very best in the world.

He is magic but he dived and play acted horribly throughout taking the shine off for me.

Yep.

I thought Navas was good too.

Barcelona played keep ball for 80 minutes that night and Utd. couldn't get near them.

He is a great player and he had a very good game, but don't think he ran the show tonight.

I thought he did as the game went on, and would agree with keni. Iniesta is a connoisseur's player, quietly excellent in almost everything he does. Yes, he ducks and dives at times, but less than most even then. Who doesn't in big-time football anyway?

He is priceless for them, Barcelona would never sell and he would never leave. Truley amazing player. Tippy tappy at it's best.

Many have jumped on the Iniesta bandwagon over the last two years but he has always been great. A few of us here including Keni, Oncy etc. always highlighted him for special attention.

In that first 10-15mins though, they looked ropey and didn't begin the game well at all. I just remember Iniesta leading the way for them.

As for playacting, I don't know... I think he went down easy a couple of times and the Spanish players love waving imaginary cards around (although tonight you could hardly blame them), but overall it wasn't a very obvious feature of his performance for me.

from beeb

Andres Iniesta: footballer of rare skill, World Cup final matchwinner and cracking human being to boot. When he peeled off his t-shirt, his vest bore the words "Dani Jarque is always with us". If that doesn't get the emotions going, nothing will.

Yeah, he was ace tonight. In fact, he's ace most nights. Particularly amazing/heartening in an age when football is meant to be all about power, height and pace that a small, weedy little guy who looks more like a librarian can run rings round players twice as tall, fast and strong as him. I also like the fact that - unlike Ronaldo, Ribery, Robben, even Messi - his instincts are always team-oriented rather than individual. He takes the initiative if necessary, but if someone else is better-placed he will almost always pass to them.

he's also a class individual:

Andres Iniesta dedicated his winning goal in the World Cup final to former Espanyol defender Dani Jarque, who died after suffering a heart attack in August 2009.

Iniesta scored in extra-time in Johannesburg's Soccer City to give Spain a 1-0 victory over Netherlands and their first ever World Cup title. The triumph under Vicente del Bosque comes just two years after their victory at Euro 2008.

When Iniesta volleyed the ball past Maarten Stekelenburg he ripped off his kit to reveal a vest reading "Dani Jarque is always with us." Iniesta explained that he did so to honour the memory of his deceased friend.

"The manner in which it happened, we gave everything," Iniesta said. "To win the World Cup there are no words to describe it.

"This is for Dani Jarque, for my family, for all of the people. It is the result of hard work over a long time and some difficult moments."

Well said.

Arf!

Keni and Oncey's name just stick out to me as those who has showered him with constant praise about 3-4 years ago.

Hold on a minute lets not go on as if this lad is some unsung hero, Iniesta is a fucking cracking player and has been for a good few years now, I saw Barca against Levante here in Valencia three or four years ago when he was pretty much a fringe player, Deco and Ronaldinho et al running the show and he was the best player on the park even then....

IF only we could have player as good in our team. Top top notch, quiet he may be but unsung he isnt.
I think thats just because we watched a lot of Spanish footie even before he made the first team. Anyone who watched him regularly could see he was something special. The season he came into the team you could see that they had an amazing talent (incidentally thats the season i think that Xavi played most of as a DM and was fucking masterful there).
The Amazing thing is the continuation of their production line. It really is fucking remarkable. The Post Van Gaal revolution that they underwent as a club is nothing short of amazing.
Messi, Dos Santos, Xavi, Iniesta, Pedro, Busquets, Bojan its a fucking ready made dynasty.

You can add Pepe to that list.
Theres loads mate i wasnt trying to be difinitive.

Every time I watch Alonso play makes me hate Rafa even more. He is the fecking bees knees! I miss him!

Iniesta is a great player but his antics aren't any better than Ronaldo. He needs to stay on his feet instead of spending so much time on his arse!

Yeah. Same for me. He nearly wore out that imaginary card of his too.

Nice scene and gesture from the Espanyol fans and players upon his substitution last night.

Emotivo- hinchas del Espanyol ovacionaron a Andrés Iniesta

Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta is the rarest of rare breeds - a Blaugrana player who's captured even the hearts of Espanyol fans.

That's not just because he scored the winning goal for Spain in the 2010 World Cup final, but because upon doing so he revealed a t-shirt bearing the message, "Dani Jarque, always with us."

Dani was Espanyol captain until his tragic death at the age of just 26, and having come up through the Spain youth ranks alongside Iniesta and other members of the team, he was fondly regarded not just by Periquitos fans but by the Spanish football community in general.

Thus Andres, upon being substituted off late in Barcelona's 5-1 victory, received the biggest cheer of the night, not just from the crowd but from his team-mates and his rivals as well.

He said after the match, "I felt something when I was on the pitch, and that's the greatest thing. More important than the rivalry are the people involved," he said.

On the match itself, he remarked, "It's always a difficult encounter but we used space well, and our forwards were very successful."
