... that opposing teams were allowed to have any part their kit the same colour as teach other? Stoke and Swansea both with the white shorts...

When Ireland often must wear all green and England all white, etc... that doesn't make any sense.
 
I could be wrong but I don't think it's as cut and dried as your first sentence describes. I think the ref decides based on how similar the two kits look overall.

I noticed that too and i'm certain that the rule is as you described - you can't wear the same colour socks, or shorts, or shirt..
