Huntelaar

If you had asked me that a few games ago i would have agreed. But right now suarez seems to be thriving on the false 9 and improving with every game. No way would i move him from the middle now. What we need are goalscoring partners on the wing. I'd like sturridge and walcott on either side of suarez with them all interchanging.

I have exactly the same feeling. Although I would definitely not choose Walcott and Sturridge as wing-forwards. Walcott is better through the middle and I'm not a fan of Sturridge. Isco and Müller, please!

Well, it took us nine pages but - pish and tush! - we've finally established that this Huntelaar fellow won't be coming. So that's two points to Frank's team. And now on to round five: the mystery word.

Pretty sure everyone said we won't get him a few pages ago.

People are just hoping

If we sign Huntelaar, isn't it a bit of an admission that the long term strategy we've set out on is complete bollocks? I mean him being old and expensive and what-not.
Therefore, he says clinging to the hope that we ARE working to a strategy, I hope we don't sign him. Otherwise, I will have to perceive this as an act of desperate measure.

All the most successful idealists have been willing to act pragmatically when it suits them. The ones that haven't have disappeared down history's U-bend faster than a flushed turd.

Walcott is not "better through the middle". If he had been, Wenger would have been playing him there for a long time by now.

Agree about Sturridge though.

Yeah, but we're 3 months into a long term plan and looking to abandon it, if this rumour is true. I don't mind going through some lean times if I think it's part of the master plan, but please don't deviate willy-nilly and make me think you're making it up as you go along!!!

The owners set the tone when they abandoned their proposed structure just to secure the manager.

Wenger said recently that Theo would end up playing through the centre.
Insane that he with so few starts is their top scorer with 8 goals.

I'd sign him in a heartbeat. Same with Sturridge

One Arse fan I know reckons Wenger only said that to try and persuade Walcott not to leave, and I think he may well be right. Walcott's finishing has defo improved, but from the same right-sided position he's always played. The Arse haven't seen fit to play him down the middle despite the fact that he's been on about it for years. There's a reason for that. Walcott's a decent enough player, and if he were happy to play on the right of our front three I wouldn't be against signing him for a sensible price, but he isn't. Do Not Want.

All of that applies to Sturridge too.

I don't know, Jules, Walcott seems a bright and sensible character but he's so angry these days about not being given a proper chance to play in the centre it intrigues me about the roots of that passion. I'd like to see him played there, over time, to see just what his potential actually is, because we just don't know at present. But that's all about experimentation, and, as you suggest, what the club needs now is a sure thing.

Some interesting comments earlier this evening from Alan Green on 606. He reckoned a deal bringing Huntelaar to Liverpool had gone quite a long way towards completion when Huntelaar's wage demands (£3 mill.a year reportedly) brought things to a halt.

£3m per year is less than £60k per week.
Didn't he reject a contract offer from Schalke far in excess of that?

Unless it's 3m after tax.... Unless you factored that in

My maths isn't quite the best

Just passing some info on I was told by a family friend last night. It could well be bollocks, but he said that Liverpool had agreed deals for Huntelaar and Lukaku. I doubt we will sign either but there you go.

Ye, I can't see it either. He was adamant though. I know SCM love a bit of a gossip, so I thought I'd share. Suppose if by some madness it turns out to be true I can pretend I know stuff and call myself an ITK! Then I've made it...

Allow me to join the chorus of posters who can't see a Lukaku deal happening. He seems quite a prospect but, even if the Chavs were willing to sell to us (and I reckon you fellas are right about that), the fee they'll want will be humungous, and he doesn't look to me like the kind of player who will fit naturally into Rodgers' preferred style of play anyway.

You haven't made it until Chang threatens your family's home & business & says he'll make fans shit through your letter box.

Lukaku's size and physique may make him look more like a target man type striker, but he's more than that. He's very pacy and mobile, and isn't averse to pulling out wide to put crosses in as well. I saw some extended highlights of his play against Blackburn last season, and he was putting at least 3 solid crosses in from the right (one of which led to a goal by Terry). He's obviously also a good target man of course, with his size, strength and mobility.

Would love him here but can't see it happening.

how much did the Chavs pay for him?? it was big bucks wasnt it?? And how the fuck did they make a profit last season?? Those interest free loans from Abramovich are quite something eh...
