Huntelaar

My concern is that he'll be a bit like Dzeko at City - great at scoring goals - but a player that the manager doesn't really want to trust in because he doesn't contribute enough otherwise.
Well surely Rodgers wouldn't sign him in the first place if this was the case!?

In all likelihood we will not be in the CL next season either so to buy an experienced goalscorer such as Huntellaar is a bit of coup IMO, I'm not by any means his biggest fan but he is a proven goalscorer.... younger than the Dempseys of this world also...

Yeah by a whole 5 months!
How much would he go for in Jan considering hes out of contract in the summer?

I know some on here disagree but I think a striker or, more concisely, a goal poacher is essential for us.

It's never quite as simple as adding one "missing link" but there are plenty of examples where bringing one player in changed a teams mentality from one of uncertainty to one of belief and a winning mentality.

For me the question becomes how important is the season or how valuable is the season.

If it's worth 10m for us to finish in the top 6 then we should be prepared to pay 10m for a goal scorer (or 2) to achieve that.

I personally think that top 4 was beyond us the moment the window slammed shut a few months ago. As soon as I saw we hadn't signed a goal scoring striker I was sure we would reach the CL this season. Is top 6 worth it in preparation for the next season? It's hard to convince people you're heading north if you finish outside top 6 twice in succession.

Suarez creates (and misses) enough chances to win half the games played on his own. An RVN would have seen us in the top 6 right now and possibly top 4. January will be too late for top 4 with the mancs and Chavs wrapping up 3 spots and I still think Spurs or Arsenal will get the last one. It will be painful if the blues do it but whatever. We just need someone who sits in the box and puts it in the back of the net

If we can get a striker of his klass for 6 million, it would be a very good piece of January business:

Top of the Klaas: Liverpool ready to launch cut-price £6m bid for Huntelaar

Jan the man: Huntelaar scored 29 goals for Schalke last season
Liverpool are ready to launch a bid for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar after discovering that the Dutch striker may be available for just £6million.
Huntelaar is out of contract at Schalke 04 in the summer and is expected to reject a final offer from the Germans.

That has put Brendan Rodgers on alert as he looks to solve a striking crisis that is damaging Liverpool’s season. The Kop boss has no intention of recalling £35million Andy Carroll from his season-long loan at West Ham.

And, although he has been given a limited budget to spend in the New Year, Huntelaar will add proven firepower to his team.

At 29, the ex-PSV Eindhoven, Ajax, Real Madrid and AC Milan hit-man does not fit the age profile Liverpool’s owners have put in place for new signings.

But Rodgers needs to add experience to his young team and Huntelaar’s contract dispute makes him available at the right kind of price. One problem for Rodgers will be to convince the Dutchman Liverpool have a great future as well as a glorious past.

Huntelaar would prefer to join a club heading for the Champions League.

But he is also keen to experience playing in the Premier League and says he will join a club that has the “right feeling”.

He scored 29 goals for Schalke last season.

This article may be bs though as I don't think he ever played for PSV ...

Just read this article in the daily mirror paper.. for 6m you can't turn that down..

I like the comment about a club with the right feeling aswell.
Dirk will obviously tell him to join us, and Carrie Bairds comment about wanting to link up with Suarez also makes this interesting.

6 mill for him is a bargain, fantastic piece of business if we could pull it off.

So long as he is played in the middle and not shunted outwide.

Well yeah, Huntelaar is a player that you can't even think of playing out wide.

Suarez would have to play out wide, although in reality he'd just have a free role.

It's a relatively cheap fee but still a bad signing. It's Morientes mark 2.

He's a better finisher than Morientes though, Morientes was more a second striker at times. I get the comparison though, sluggish, etc, but our setup would allow him to roam pretty much and not be too reliant on pace, given there's a fair amount of pace around him in the side.

Huntelaar has already scored 100 goals more than Morientes did his whole career.
Huntelaar is one of the top players in the world infront of goal while Morientes was a good finisher at best.

The comparison is just an effort to troll or based on very poor football knowledge.

He's also got more pace, great movement and is used to playing as a striker in a 4-3-3/ 4-2-3-1.

IF we manage it, it will be a great signing.

Huntelaar is a boss.

Prob won't be as amazing here, but he'll be better than our current options

Because we don't have any

Hansern, your always wrong. What happened in the past is irrelevant, but everyone knows Morientes played in tougher leagues for most of his career.

Answer me this- if your in your thirties, slow, not particularly strong - what league do you not want to experience for the first time?

Simple answer

He's just turned 29, just to be a bit pedantic, he's not a weakling either and his movement is excellent, which is half the battle, contrast that to someone like Carroll, who didn't have the intelligence to make 'striker' runs, or Morientes for that matter.

Our game has changed alot more whereby we're not as reliant as we once were on through balls and hitting teams on the break. Our game is much more measured and the approach play can often be more patient allowing us to get players forward in numbers and giving them the opportunity to take up good positions, as Huntelaar would.

Like I said, I get the concerns about a lack of pace, but the league has changed a lot and it's alot more focused on good football rather than being direct and he'd benefit. Our problems in the past with the likes of Kuyt, Crouch and Carroll leading the line was that we didn't have the players around them to support with movement, pace and flair. We do now.

Good points Mark - I'd also like to add that this guy is a world class finisher. Morientes was a very good striker, but his finishing abilities pale compared to Huntelaar. Is there some concern for how he'd adapt to the PL? Of course. But considering the chances we're missing in most games - I think if he's in the box and Sterling/Suarez etc create the room for him to get a shot or two, he'll score 10-15 goals by season's end in all competitions.

Yeah, I'm wrong.... Sadly Ross you couldnt be more full of it.

Just turned 29 years old. Playing in the Bundesliga, which is the league in Europe closest matched the Premier League for pace and intensity. Never had to rely on pace, but the strong part is horrendously wrong.
Morientes was a bit part player with 3-4 good seasons for Real and Monaco.
Your description is spot on for a Morientes type player, sadly for you Huntelaar is on another level.

He'll adapt no problem and be a hit. I really hope we sign him now so you'll have to eat your Louis Litt shaped words.

If ever proof was needed that this place is falling to shit, it's when people like Ross use "your" instead of "you're".

Louis van Gaal has been quoted saying about the player "in the penalty area, he is the best player in the world, bar none.
This is the key part imho. We'll have pace through our wingers and with the posession based football we want to play, having a striker like this will improve us no end infront of goal.
