Howard Webb

Great. He'll be even more up his own arse when he gets back.
On a side note, the last englishman to ref the final gave a pen to the dutch in the first minute. 1974 Jack Taylor.

Quite. Webb is overrated and not even the best ref in the Prem. He hasn't (yet) dropped the kind of terrible ricket which some of his colleagues have in this WC, so he gains from the comparison.

In my opinion Webb was the best ref the season before last, but for some reason his form went off last season and he was no better than average.

Maybe success went to his head?

I think I only really notice refs when they do stuff wrong, so I probably don't like any of them, but I know for sure I don't ike Howard Webb. He fucking loves lording it over players.

Obviously you need authority, but it shouldn't come with arrogance and self love.

In short: he's a cock.

Exactly, fair play to him and all as he has had a good tournament but this will just make him puff out his chest and peacock around 10 times worse when he gets back to reffing matches in England.

This is bad news. When it comes to creativity, skill, application and determination the English at the tournament fail. But when called upon to produce a middle aged guy who excels at telling everyone else what to do...

Also, every channel in every country on the planet will make a joke about England making it to a WC final.

I hope he gives 7 penalties and sends 10 players off. Then headbutts Puyol at the final whistle before doing a lap of dishonour in the plod.

Refs really do have everyone against them don't they ? I don't care if Webb 'is up his own arse' or 'lords it over players'. Players get away with murder trying to con refs and everyone on here was constantly up in arms with the way United & Chelsea players badgered and surrounded refs. If one of them is giving as good as he gets then good on him - the players deserve to have a whip cracked over them. The difference in respect and protection the refs get, between say football & rugby, is astounding and the administrators of the game, managers & players are all to blame.

Webb has performed impeccably in this tournament, as have the English linesmen, so he deserves his crack at the final. Hope he has a good one.

Agree with quite a bit of that, but two wrongs don't make a right. It is possible for referees to be authoritative without hogging the limelight, and there are refs in the Prem who strike that balance better than Webb (and make fewer mistakes while they're at it, on last season's performance anyway).

Graham Poll, wasn't it? And he compounded the error by actually giving the guy a third yellow in the same game. At least he then sent him off, but still - historic fail.
