How much would Liverpool legends be worth in today’s transfer market?

£150m

I would have been disappointed with 65 Million for Gerrard 10 years ago.

A young Fowler or Owen would probably be worth £150m+.

A 22, 23 year old Gerrard, probably around £150m+.

Then you of course have a 22 year old Lucas that would easily be worth around £1 billion.

Yeah that does ring a bell. Given hindsight and what we won in that time was it worth him turning it down? I'm talking after the 6CM's of course!
For the club? Probably. They wouldn't have spent it wisely! For him? No comment.

@tombrown - Stop it. Anyone would think I'm a 'like' whore! Don't let me tell them your address! Oh fuck it - Anyone that wants to contact Tom post anything to Tom Brown. Ireland. That should find him. 🙂

You've always been a big fan of Terry Mac GK. My uncle was as well. Wish I could have seen him.

I think he's so underrated (Terry, but probably your uncle, too!). In the year he won player of the year, wow, he was so, so good. A great engine, great imagination, and, long before players were being hailed as world stars for arriving late into the box to finish a move, he was doing it every game. I really adored his style of play.

Yeah my Uncle was/is a massive fan. He sort of takes the piss these days. He is completely firm in his belief that he was a stunning player. He likes to point out that if you saw him in the flesh (Kop end) the likes of Stevie G and Alonso would pale in comparison. I always laugh and think about the rose tinted angle he has. I rather like the enigma of the man though. Your genuine respect of him just adds to that. Thanks GK. Did you ever see Keegan btw? Or if anyone saw Keegan play for that matter? I always wondered what he'd be like bombing forward. I rather imagine he'd be like Suarez.

A lot of today's top players don't have everything in their repertoire, it still doesn't stop them being classed as the best. Terry Mc had the lot.
I know today's players can run for ever but Gerrard is the only player we've had since our last title win who would make those 70s & 80s teams.

Awww man - I wish I could have seen him. No worries. I saw Suarez rip apart Norwich (twice) so I'm happy enough.

Not really. Keegan didn't "have a trick" as such and relied mainly on a combination of straight line speed (he was tremendously quick with the ball at his feet), strength (don't let the mullet fool you - he was a nuggety little player, not nasty but powerful for his size) and low centre of gravity. I loved watching him play, but Suarez has a lot more in his locker.

Lots of times as a little lad. In fact, through a freakish run of luck, I saw him loads in his last season. It sounds mad in today's climate, but blokes would meet my mum - she was working in a shop at the time - and they'd say, 'You're always saying how your little lad's a massive red, well, I'll take him to a game' - and I went! So I got to see loads of away games as well as home, nearly always close to the touchline, so I could often hear Kevin bawl out Joey Jones for not being Alec Lindsay and balooning the ball miles over his head. Amazing player, even if that last season was a wee bit tense at times. He was more direct than Suarez, in the runs he made, he ran less with the ball at his feet, more into space, but he was so lively and passionate and fiercely competitive. He could also singlehandedly run down the clock from about the 70th minute - against Coventry late in the season, away from home, he'd get the ball on the right, back to goal, pivot one way, then the other, invite the foul, fall down, take a short free kick, get it back, then repeat and repeat. It was quite hypnotic!

Haha! Brilliant. Shame he left when he did. I believe it rather sullied his reputation.

The local amateur club I played for used to go to Liverpool for Easter weekend, in the early to mid seventies. Seven hour sailing from Dublin to Liverpool on Good Friday ( Pubs closed at home), usually arrived around 6pm well pissed, and continued drinking for most of the weekend.

We had fans of different clubs, mostly Liverpool, utd and Everton. On Easter Sunday 1974 we went to our hotel dining room for some lunch and who was there with his family but the great Bill Shankly. When lunch was over he spoke to us for about ten minutes and signed autographs before going on his way. A lovely man. Unfortunately no camera phones in those days.

The following day Liverpool were not playing until 8pm . Rather than go to old trafford or Goodison me and a mate headed up to Anfield around midday to see what was happening. The players were just arriving back from training by bus so we waited until they came back out.

Most of them passed on with just a nod but Steve Heighway and Kevin Keegan both stopped for a chat and even when Heighway went on his way after about five minutes, Keegan chatted on. When he was going he said something like " I'd better go I have a match tonight". We walked across the car park with him to his car. A blue Volkswagen beetle.

Incidentally we beat Man City that night 4 0 with goals from Brian Hall (2), Phil Boersma and Keegan, all scored in the first half. Unfortunately we lost the title to Leeds that year but won the FA cup 3 0 against Newcastle. It was to be Shankly’s last season in charge.

Great memories
