How interested in a 4-4-2 is Rafa?

With all the (unrealistic in my opinion) talk of Villa coming to us, it got me thinking about our formation and whether Rafa is as fixed on 4-2-3-1 as we think he is.

I had a quick look through our line-ups last season and it turns out we actually played with a 4-4-2 a fair bit. Obviously injuries were a contributory factor, but there were occasions when we opted against the 4-2-3-1 in favour of two up front.

I'm still not really sure how to factor in the whole Keane saga despite having had a season to think about it, but when we signed him Rafa was talking about a potential partnership between him and Torres. Could Rafa look to establish another strike partnership (other than Torres-Gerrard) this summer?

Could 4-4-2 rival the 4-2-3-1 for our preferred formation or is it just another option?

Rafa always look at and analyse the opposition then he'd decide on our tactics & line-up.

I wish he didn't though.

At times the 442 might work, and is employed mainly against the weaker opposition but 4231 (or variations of it) is the way to go.

I think his plan A is, and will continue to be, 4-2-3-1 - otherwise we would've been linked to far more strikers, surely?
