A 39-year-old nursery worker from Plymouth is still being questioned in connection with the distribution of indecent images of children.

Vanessa George was arrested at her home in the Efford area on Monday night as police swooped on Little Ted's nursery in Laira, Plymouth, where she works.

The nursery, which has about 60 children, has been closed by police while inquiries are carried out.

A 38-year-old man has been charged in connection with the investigation.

The man, from Littleborough, near Rochdale, appeared at Trafford Magistrates' Court on Tuesday charged with possessing and distributing indecent images.

Parents' meeting

Items seized by investigating officers included computer equipment, police said.

Police sources said the pornographic images, which were numbering in the hundreds, were at the "top end of the scale".

Parents arriving at the nursery to drop off children on Tuesday morning were handed a letter by police explaining what had happened.

In the evening a closed meeting was held by police for parents at St Paul's Church in Efford.

More than 100 concerned parents and relatives packed the church hall for the meeting which some found highly emotional.

A 24-year-old woman, who has a four-year-old daughter at the nursery said: "The information we were given is not good.

"Some people were in tears. You just don't expect this kind of thing."

Little Ted's operates from Laira Green Primary School and Laira United Church Hall.

Children in the nursery are aged between two and five, but youngsters up to 11 can attend breakfast and after-school clubs.

Both units will remain closed for the time being, police said.

The Devon and Cornwall force also confirmed their investigation was focused on the church site which looks after the youngest group of babies and toddlers.

About 40 police officers are working on the case, including internet crime investigators. Children's care specialists are also involved in the operation, police said.

I'm just a bit taken aback that her identity is all over the place.
