What is "chat" in the top bar along with messages etc?

In what way??
You mean get rid of the bars at the side? If so, then you cant, it's like that on purpose so the site can be viewed properly on all resolutions.

I like all the changes so far but don't see the need for a front page, personally.

No mate, when i enter a thread the page width is half the size that it normally was. It's no biggy but i'd like to change it if i can.

We had a link in a minute ago to top threads or new threads, that's handy.
The rss feed is awkward. Spoken to other LFC sites that use them & they have to manually weed out half o them, cos 'Liverpool' comes up with all the news on the city as well as the footy. The only way round it would be to have a feed in of all sports news.
