He was brilliant in every aspect

Exactly. He was far from being a bad signing at the time, it made plenty of sense. He just turned out to grotesquely under-perform.

I pondered why it should take so long for Downing to find some sort of form. Usually he has been so anxious to get rid of the ball onto someone else. One thought that occurred to me was that he had been adversely affected by the pressure to perform. Maybe if he thinks he will be on his way in January, he has relaxed and felt free to play his normal game.

Yeah, credit were its due. He was good yesterday but the shooossing shite was a bit to much.
No need for it tbh, the crowd has been pretty good to him despite the lack of desire, balls, assists, goals and pretty much everything else but good performances.

Really interesting idea, that. I think it could well be right.

No wonder Stoke fans hate us, how many LFC rejects would they then have on their books? Pennant, Crouch, Adam and Downing?

One swallow does not make a summer and no one is going to stump up that or 100 grand a week in Jan.
Who knows it just could be the springboard. Credit where credit is due he was great today.

regards
It's more than just 'one swallow' to be fair. He was good in his last few games.

Downing said: "After our conversation I just thought: 'I have to go for it.' I had nothing to lose. It looked as though I would be on my way in January so basically I had to play well to get a new club. It seems to be coming together now and I am pleased. It has been hard work at times but you have got to keep persevering, stay strong, and I got my reward against Fulham.

"Being told I could go was a kick up the arse. The moment that happens you are playing for a new club and looking for a move, while trying to play well at the same time. It seems to have gone well but I have never wanted to leave Liverpool. But it was out of my hands. The only thing I could do was play well and try and make the manager change his mind."

The England midfielder only heard of Rodgers's reappraisal as he was walking out of Anfield on Saturday night. "If he wants me to stay now that just shows how quickly things can change in football," said Downing, with an element of surprise that was surpassed when Rodgers initially announced he could leave.

Downing said: "The manager was pleased with me at the start but then things changed very quickly and I was told I could go. I don't know who makes that decision but one minute I was told I was doing well and the next I was told I could go, so it was a bit confusing.

"It was confusing that I was in the team and then I was told I could leave but all a footballer can do in that situation is try to change the manager's mind. If it was a gee-up for me to tell me I could go, if it was meant to be a kick up the arse, then maybe it has worked because the performances are coming now and hopefully it continues.

"I want to stay. I never wanted to leave but obviously I was out of the team, I was frustrated as a result of that, and in that situation you have to look at something if it crops up. The only thing I can do is play well and make him keep me here. I am pleased it has come together because I have worked hard to get to a club like this and I don't want to leave in a hurry."

Seems to match what I suspected - he was playing well to impress scouts. Said this post-game:

I'm skeptical about him - I still suspect his recent performances are due to the "n games to save my LFC career" or "scouts are watching me" effects.

All that "I'm so confused, I'm so confused" shit are fucking lame excuses. I also said this:

The worst case for us is to be convinced that his "resurgence" is for real and keep him through the January window, only for him to revert to type after that.

Hope that second part doesn't come true.

No, a few people have said this but I think it's a matter of comparison, I think he has been better than he has been in the last few games, but it was still pretty poor, but culminating on Saturday to a great game

Downing's comments do nothing to make the situation clearer. He says that he tried harder following the interview with Rodgers, but he doesn't explain why he hadn't been delivering - in fact he doesn't really accept that most of his performances have been very substandard.

Yeah, I thought the commentator on the match was bang on. He was like, "you'd think he'd been doing it every week". I didn't like it at all, but fair play, he had a great game, and he was striking the ball beautifully.

He seems to be under the impression that he wasn't performing badly, that's the only way you could explain the shush (which could have just as easily have been aimed at the media) and, as Portly said, failing to acknowledge why he was performing so badly before the conversation with Rodgers.

That said, look at Enrique, aside from an initial really good spell for us, he'd hit poor form for a good while too but Rodgers allegedly spoke to him after having reservations and he said he's upped his game also, so the end result in both respects is win-win for us, regardless of what the future may hold, particularly for Downing.

I don't like Downing. I didn't like him before he signed and I don't like him now.

His attitude stinks and that interview just underlines that for me. He ends a season after a 20M transfer with no assists, no goals and a months of dire display after dire display and he decides to inform us that he thinks he's done well. Then after playing even worse the following season he only ups his game once he knows he needs to play for a new club.

Fuck the fuck off Stewie. If it wasn't for Carroll he'd be our worst signing ever.

lets see him do it for 5 games before we get excited , there is no doubt he has the latent just never the right attitude

It isn't so much the attitude IMO (he's never slacked off as such), more a matter of mental strength or the lack of it. Maybe he had to hit rock bottom in terms of his performances and reputation in order to be shocked into toughening up.

And he wouldn't touch 'The Sign'.

If he'd said, "I've been shit, but I can be so much better", then I'd applaud him.

Exactly. No evidence of regret at all. I think that on balance, he will probably revert to the anonymous Downing so I wouldn't be sorry if we sold him for a decent price next month, even though he showed himself to be a game-changer on Saturday.

I'm hoping he keeps performing at this level so we can get a decent fee in January. I'd definitely still sell him.

I can't see he'd agree to any move in January. He's now well aware that we don't have a good enough squad to completely drop him even when he's playing badly so there is no realistic threat of him being dumped in the reserves if he refuses to move. He can sit tight until the summer when he'll have more options, especially if he keeps playing at or near his current level.

I have to say having watched the match again he's a cheeky shit for his shushing celebration.

Its a win win though, if he plays well he'll contribute to the team and we'll probably get a few more mill when we sell him.

Rodgers telling him that he could leave probably had some effect aswell. But lets see what happens in the next few games though.

Brings to mind the film - "Awakenings".
