Brendan Rodgers praised Stewart Downing's performance after the winger netted his first Barclays Premier League goal for Liverpool and grabbed an assist in the Reds' 4-0 victory over Fulham.

The 28-year-old was in fine form from start to finish as the Reds put the disappointment of defeat to Aston Villa a week ago firmly behind them with a dominant display.
He carved Steven Gerrard's goal - the second of the game - with a perfectly-weighted through ball and then raced in from the right touchline and fired past Mark Schwarzer for 3-0.
"I thought Stewart was brilliant today, in every aspect of the game," Rodgers told his post-match press conference.
"I spoke to Stewart about six or seven weeks ago and we had an honest conversation about where he was at. He's in his late 20s, he was an England international a few years ago and he wasn't playing [regularly for Liverpool].
"So we spoke about how he could get into the team. And I think his reaction from that moment, like it has been for Jose Enrique and one or two of the others, has been outstanding.
"His goal today was a fantastic strike and he combines very well with Glen Johnson out on the right side because he clears space for Glen to run into. Stewart's movement is really intelligent and his pass for Steven's goal was superb.
"You'll find with attacking players, because their job is always to take people on, if it's not quite happening for them, they need that bit of support. But all they can do is work hard.
"Stewart has played a lot of games. He's a very important member of our group at the minute and if he keeps performing like that, hopefully he'll establish himself in [the side] and show the talent he clearly has.
"If he keeps playing like that, he'll be going nowhere - he'll be staying in the team and that's what it's about."
A week on from a 3-1 loss to Villa at Anfield, the Reds were an entirely different proposition as they took the game to Fulham right from the off.
Martin Skrtel smashed the ball home on eight minutes to give them the lead, Gerrard slotted the second before Downing and Luis Suarez both notched to seal a 4-0 victory.
"I thought we were outstanding today," said Rodgers. "I knew we would get a reaction because I have very honest players here, working very hard every day.
"Last week was disappointing but this week we have had our first clear week of work and we have worked through from Saturday to Saturday. And I think you saw the reaction today. The pressing was outstanding and the quality of the football and the goals was brilliant."
The win propelled the Reds to eighth place in the league table and to within five points of third-placed Arsenal.
And with a hectic Christmas schedule now underway, Rodgers is confident his side can build on a resounding result and continue to climb the table.
"If you look beyond last week [against Villa] I think we have been improving steadily," he said. "You can see the confidence in the team.
"If you lose like we did last week and then you come back to Anfield and play like we did today, it shows the courage of the players.
"I thought they were fantastic and they have been improving every week. If we keep making the progress that we have, then it should be a really exciting second half to the season for us.
"We have got four games in quick succession, so we'll recover the players well and make sure they are right because it is a great opportunity to pick up points and keep moving forward."

Maybe this is the game that reignites this player's confidence and lets him contribute more often to our team on a more consistent basis..

Our pressing has indeed been outstanding in this game. For me that was by far the most impressive aspect of the performance. We were calm and energetic at the same time and Fulham players had absolutely no options in front of them for most of the game. It remains to be seen how effective our pressing can be against more inventive opposition. But for Fulham today that was more than enough - a Rafa-style python hug of death. We didn't play particularly well in attack, but still scored 4 and could have added a few more; such was our dominance in every aspect of the play that the goals practically creating themselves.

Hooray for Stewie.

Fulham were awful today but fair play he looked up for it out there today. Finally!

I hope he carries on in this fashion. Win win for us regardless of how it pans out.

if we get an offer near 10m for him in january we'd be mad not to take it .

One swallow does not make a summer and no one is going to stump up that or 100 grand a week in Jan.
Who knows it just could be the springboard. Credit where credit is due he was great today.

regards

Today's fantastic performance was the kind of thing I had expected from Downing when we signed him. I am puzzled as to why he has been so anonymous for most of the time.

In fairness, Ports, he did make a decent start and looked really good in the first game of the season. Had a thunderous shot hit the bar, set up some nice chances that were spurned and soon his confidence began to fade.

Sage words Vlad. I agree completely.

People seem to forget that he was fucking boss for us in his first four or five games for us. Don't get me wrong, he has been dire for us the majority of the time and I've never been enamored with this signing but credit where its due.

Best player on the park and he has steadily improved over the last few games from acceptable to good to very good to motm. He deserves to keep his place

He scores when he wants, he scores when he waaaaaaaants, Stewart Downing...he scores when he wants!!!

Hahahaha

Can't believe that fucker got his first assist AND goal for LFC today. Only took a year and a half 😉

he was very good but i really hope his celebration wasn't a 'fuck you' to the kop.

Nah I don't think so, if anything it could be an eff you to the media. I'm sure he knows he hasn't lived up to expectations since he came to LFC, it would be hard to argue otherwise.

Very good game from him today but I'm not sold that he'll play like this often in the league games ahead. Fulham were dire at the back so that helped. We've also seen Downing play well in cup games against lower league teams, only to return to shit form back in league games.

I'm skeptical about him - I still suspect his recent performances are due to the "n games to save my LFC career" or "scouts are watching me" effects. The worst case for us is to be convinced that his "resurgence" is for real and keep him through the January window, only for him to revert to type after that.

Hopefully his recent performances will result in better bids coming in.

My thoughts exactly. I know it's too early but is it possible that there is a glimmer of hope for Super Stu?

Has there ever been a player playing as shit as he has that's become good later on?

I do hope he'll become good, as I do for every Liverpool player.

What was all the shush celebration bollocks about ? Cheeky cunt. Scores one league goal and he's shushing people. Why the absolute nerve of it.

I couldn't understand that. Does a 'Shhhhhh' and then runs towards the supporters.
Whatever. He's limited. A good squad player, but he's cost us near-world class player transfer fee, and gets paid more money than most other players at our club.
Get rid.

If he thinks one decent performance will 'silence' anyone then he thicker than Trigger.

Messi is brilliant in every aspect most games. Stew isn't.

He didn't give the perfect performance yesterday, still shit out of a number of tackles and misplaced a number of passes, especially early on the forst half.

However, he did do really well after the set up for Gerrard. Playing against Fulham is his level, he will never do it against a better side. Just look at when he has played well or contributed to goals and assists. Always against poor opposition.

If the last few games have upped our asking price then great. I'd still get shut asap.

Exactly. He was far from being a bad signing at the time, it made plenty of sense. He just turned out to grotesquely under-perform.
