Fabio Capello has labelled Glen Johnson as one of the best right backs in Europe.
The England Head Coach has been suitably impressed with Liverpool’s number two and has totally refuted concerns about his defensive capabilities.

Capello said: "We haven't got a lot of right-backs, but for me Johnson is one of the best right-backs in the world. This is my opinion.

"I really think that. I'm happy with Johnson.

"He's one of the best right-backs in the world. He is, sure, not just coming forward but also his defending."

Asked was he worried about the threat that will be posed on Wednesday night by Croatia's Nico Kranjcar down the left flank, Capello replied: "No, I'm not worried. I think it will be Kranjcar who will be worried about Johnson."

Good to read, good to see him getting credit, especially after the media tried to blame him solely for the goal against England. I'm really chuffed with Johnson so far, he's much better than I ever thought he was. The way he's playing right now, if he continues, well there's no one better around.

I take it no one will be mocking capello for this obviously outrageous opinion.

To be fair, Fabio Capello's opinion does carry a little more weight than yours.

In any case, I wouldn't have pounced on you for saying that.

...unless you were looking particularly sexy.

The test for Johnson will come against the likes of Arsenal and United. Can he cope with them defensively? I really hope so, because he's been one of the few bright points of our crap start to the season, and arguably our most potent attacking player.

Leaving us exposed to counterattacks which will be where he shows his worth, if he defend against Valencia, Evra, Cole, Clichey and Arshavin breaking at speed down the right. It'll be an interesting dual, one I relish.

That's the big question.

So far he's been doing the job he's been asked to do - help break down the smaller teams - and then some, but it'll mean little if it costs us points against the big sides.

The thing is, he is a very good defender. It's about discipline, about knowing when to attack and when to defend, and I'm certain Rafa will beat the tactics into him.

Best attacking RB in the world? Right now I don't see why not.

...this has nothing to do with what we're debating.

No one's questioning the need for Johnson to attack, we're questioning whether he'll be able to cover himself when it goes wrong.

No but I don't see the connection.

Johnson's proving an inspired signing at present.

The connection is Danny Alves was going to be our marauding attacking right back but we couldnt afford him

Heh, well I know but I just don't see the point of the question.

I don't think RB's been a specific problem of ours ever since we've missed out on Alves so it's not a major issue.

We could have had a more creative player, sure, but that's true of several areas of the pitch. Alves would have been a great signing and a potential bargain given what Barca went and spent on him - but Johnson coming in and performing so well doesn't the fact that we missed out, or made doing so somehow worthwhile.

We've picked up a great player, though. And if we are doing comparisons between the two, the best thing with this deal is Johnson isn't likely to fuck off to Spain in 3-4 years, as Alves probably would have done.

I couldn't care less what he does for England or what the media think.

Bottom line he's been head and shoulders above the rest of our squad so far this season and thats fantastic for a new signing with the likes of Gerrard and Torres in our squad.

Fortunately our center backs now how to mark players and our defensive midfielder knows how to cover space, so it's not our problem. I'm surprised at just how shit england center halves have been.
