Peter Gulacsi – Red Bull Salzburg’s first new signing

23-yead-old Hungarian signs contract with the Red Bulls running until 2017 and becomes candidate for number 1.

The first new signing for next season has been unveiled as Peter Gulacsi. The 23-year-old joins from Liverpool to sign a four-year contract with FC Red Bull Salzburg.

The former Hungarian under-21 stands at 1.92 metres tall and was able to impress during a trial in Salzburg in the spring. He is looking forward to his new challenge, saying: “I am pleased that as of now I will be able to play for an Austrian top club. My goal is to compete to be the club’s number 1 and be successful with FC Red Bull Salzburg both domestically and in Europe.”

Sporting director Ralf Rangnick said on the new signing: “We have signed a goalkeeper in Peter Gulacsi that will further improve our quality. He was here for a three-day trial where we watched him very closely and put him through his paces physically. We are convinced that he has great potential.”

He'll play in one of the shittest leagues in the whole wide world. He'll earn lots of dosh though.

Congratulations.

He progressed out on loan and then seemed to just stop improving. Quite disappointing, given his early promise, but young keepers seem a real enigma to me. You can usually pretty much work out which outfield players (barring injuries) will mature into good or potentially very good senior players, but personally I think I'll always be baffled by keepers. Fulton looks decent at the moment - he has a personality and a bit of aggression as well as basic skills - but who knows how he'll develop?

I think there's a case for many of them not really showing they have something until alot later than outfield players. Obviously there are exceptions like Hart, but many don't really come to the fore and find consistency until their mid to late 20's.

True. And we get them so young. I guess they could be ten years at the club before the coaches really form a definitive opinion, and even at that stage it will be questionable.

It seems incredibly risk-laden with young keepers. Look at when we've tried to buy a very good prospect when they appear to have gone beyond the 'danger' phase and are ready to start challenging for the first team - Kirkland, at 20, and Carson, also at 20 - huge disappointments. I suppose David James - bought at 21 - wasn't exactly a failure, but again he didn't come close to realising his full potential, even though he had the odd spell later on when he looked impressive. I guess you need to gamble and stick with them, which we didn't really do, but it all seems heavily reliant on luck rather than judgement.

It's far more difficult to judge a GK than a outfield player because they are only involved in fleeting moments of matches.

It seems to me that most young GK break through when given a chance to go out on loan or if the current number one suffers a long term injury.

Having runs in the Carling Cup is of little benifit to an aspiring keeper or to the club he's contracted to.

Exactly, they need to have a settled defence in front of them and plenty of games. I hate it when they just bung one in for the odd cup game, it does neither them nor the defence any favours. It's no coincidence that the last time we had a really trustworthy reserve keeper - Ogrizovic - he was playing week in, week out in the ressies and was match sharp on the rare occasion he was needed for the first team. Once the new convention was established of more or less 'retiring' the reserve keeper to the bench (Brad Jones has only made just over a hundred senior appearances in 16 years!*), the quality declined quickly and dramatically. It's one of the stupidities of the contemporary game.

*waits fatalistically for the 'and a good thing too' comments.

Started their 1st league game of the season. Looks like he could be their no. 1 this season. They've been drawn in the CL 3rd round qualifiers with Fenerbache, who are appealing against their ban from Europe by UEFA via the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
